Year In Review
Phew, today marks the 2 year anniversary of my starting this blog. It was a slow starter the first year, trying to figure out exactly what to post and how to talk about my work. The blog underwent a huge shift this past year, in tone, content and importance for me. It has become a place to experiment with new techniques, make jokes, write music, and share what goes on in my everyday life as an illustrator and designer. I plan on pumping up the volume exponentially this year on the blog and all things AE. Looking back at the year, I picked out a few posts I was particularly proud of and hope to match and maybe top in 2012.
2011 was the year of illustration. My work shifted heavily towards hand-crafted, fun imagery - a departure from my more precise and clean design previously. My 6 favorite images of the year pretty clearly show this trend.
First day in Seattle. Super awesome. Got up extra early on account of the time change and got all the bicycles out of the shipping boxes and ready to ride. Went to the gun range and shot a wide array of 9mm pistols. This manly activity made us realize that doing guy stuff can make you feel less manly if you’re pretty uncomfortable doing it. So then four of us tried to split a cigar but we ended up only making it half way through. I think we redeemed ourselves though, by inventing Bliskey - which is beer and whiskey, naturally. More soon.
MOVIE POSTER
Big holiday gift for my girlfriend this year was my own rendition of a movie poster for Jacques Demy’s lovely Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Really pleased with how it came out and made me work really big - final was 27x40 inches. Also really forced me to come up with a script I liked and could duplicate across several signatures. Liked it so much I hope that jaggedy cursive can be my own.
I was commissioned to create an art piece for a newborn's room/nursery. It came out really well AND I got to draw a whole bunch of dogs. Win win. Want one for your tiny baby (or grown adult)? Email me!
I’ve been a bit busy with Regulation Room stuff and summer stuff like bicycling and getting real panicky about the warmth and sunshine almost being over. I drew some people’s heads in pixelart for the RegRoom team members page which’ll be in the next version that is launching real soon.
App Guy
Been putting some megahours into the app. This is a guy, with hair like a melted fudgsicle, that you will be able to make in my upcoming app! If this looks like you… awesome. This guy is a killer guy. I can’t even tell you how many combinations of faces there are going to be, but it is thousands upon thousands. More soon!
Aurora Vs Coil
Reading the second installment of Aurora West's story in the Battling Boy universe. Love the art and monster-world. My only gripe (more a disappointment) is the printing quality. Kinda cruddy newsprint makes the greyscale coloring pretty muddy. Wanted to draw Aurora taking on her nemesis baddy Coil (in that sweet Paul Pope color).

To cap off this week of music, my crowning achievement: Brighten Up Sourpuss. This is the fullest, best made PSH attempt yet and really reflects what I like and what I do. Hope you enjoy. Check out the Bandcamp page for what is now a nice little stable of most of the music I've made in my adult life. Thanks for following along!

Been working on early stages of an ABC book. All pretty goofy alliteration with some fun animals. Twenty six is a lot of letters...
