Relatives tend to share mannerisms and if you want a nice little detail for your stories, I recommend including that.
A father and son share the same restless or anxious movement like chewing on the inside of their lip or tapping their fingers. A mother and daughter both raise their eyebrows when they’re in deep thought. Two siblings both tilt their heads when something is intriguing. A younger brother copies his older brother’s posture. A grandchild copies the way their grandfather crosses his arms behind his back when he walks. A father throws his hat down when his sports team loses and his child grows up to do the same.
Adding niche similarities between my characters and their families is one of my favourite things to develop and one of my favourite ways to connect them despite whatever relationship and differences they may have.
They could hate their family and yet they tap their foot side to side when they’re standing in one spot like their father does, and they scrunch their nose when they close their eyes like their mother did. This can be used to portray your character’s struggle with their family, and amplify their fear over ending up like their family. It’s a subtle addition and yet it adds more depth to their turmoil.
Or on the flip side, it can help show how much your character admires their family by emulating them. It can help show how important their bond with their family is to them by showing those shared, unconscious similarities.
Shared mannerisms are a small detail but they will be noticed by somebody and appreciated.
Make no mistake, the Dursleys are terrible people and unquestionably abusers.
But the one favor they did for Harry was never pretend as though they loved him. Vernon and Petunia made it very clear: You are not a part of this family. We don’t like you and never will.
They didn’t try to frame their abuse as “for Harry’s own good.” They didn’t try to make Harry believe that he could earn their love through good behavior. They didn’t tell him they loved him just as much as they loved Dudley, then subtly treat him like shit.
They were honest. And that honesty allowed Harry to put some emotional distance between himself and the Dursleys, even before Hogwarts. Because if the Dursleys don’t like him, then he didn’t have to like them.
Instead of vying for the Dursleys’ affection, Harry basically snarks his way through childhood, relishing in his status as an outsider. His early descriptions of the Dursleys are practically dripping with razor-sharp snark about their appearances and foibles. He finds comfort in the knowledge that a) he dislikes the Dursleys as much as they dislike him, and b) he alone sees these cartoonishly awful people for who they are.
harry is sort of the sirius of the golden era though isn’t he. in my head at least. like his home life is shitty, he’s loyal to a fault, he gets basically taken in by his best mate’s parents but does go his own way. he inherits a good amount of gold from his decent family members (his parents and sirius). is spat on by society & the government over something that isn’t even his fault. bit of a bitch. a cheeky little fucker. has light eyes and dark hair. would probably kill for his codependent buds if absolutely necessary. probably also has the gal (and self-imposed guilt) to stay in azkaban for 12 years before escaping on willpower alone.
someone pleeeeease make this film
I had a dream in which there was technology in the world that allowed anyone to create a film according to their desire. And I wanted a film where they would be happy.
Tumblr isn’t social media, it’s a habit. Like smoking. We’re all gathering by the dumpster in the cold, reblogging posts.
Today's children don't know what it was like when half of your photographs would turn out with demonically glowing red eyes.
Soooo late on this but I love how much robby and sam genuinely like demetri and enjoy being friends with him in s2??? like they're all hanging out outside of miyagi-do, they find his neuroticisms funny but they're not laughing at him? They're not just tolerating his company and rolling their eyes when he says something nerdy or complains you can tell they genuinely like being around him they really do just like him as he is and don't make him feel like he has to change I just ughhhhhh
