Life in the refugee camp is incredibly difficult for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, largely due to widespread homophobia. This hostility is evident in the daily threats and attacks we face from both fellow refugees and members of the host community.

We live in constant fear—targeted simply because of who we are. Violent ambushes by homophobic groups, often armed with machetes, have left many of us injured and traumatized. Over time, we’ve lost not only our sense of safety but also our belongings, our dignity, and for some, their lives.

Sexual violence is another painful reality. Lesbian women have been subjected to repeated assaults, including rape, which leaves deep emotional and physical scars. It’s heartbreaking that the place meant to provide refuge has become one of the most dangerous environments for LGBTQIA+ people.

On top of this, discrimination makes it nearly impossible for us to find employment. Despite our willingness to work and contribute, we are often rejected solely based on our sexual orientation or gender identity. This has left many of us struggling to survive, enduring illness and poverty in an environment with extremely poor living conditions.

And yet, in the midst of all this hardship, we still find strength. We celebrate Pride and recognize LGBTQIA+ awareness days quietly, often in hiding, but always with pride. We’ve even witnessed love persevere—with a few couples managing to marry and celebrate their commitment, even in secret.

Since everyone's been asking about Gabriel's fear I'm gonna try and guess it :D

He's afraid of being wrong

More specifically, he's afraid of being wrong about his perception of humans, and what that means for him and what he's done. Probably his whole identity, too, since we don't know a lot about him and what we do know leaves the impression that his identity is built around his hate for humanity

Obviously, it's not a 'cower and cry and shiver like a mouse' kind of fear, but the kind that can be easily ignored until something happens to bring the thought back to the front of his mind, and then be swiftly ignored again, rinse and repeat until it can't be ignored

So, in a way, it's more like the fear of losing sight of who he is and his purpose

But I'm just throwing wild guesses here :p

This is a really interesting take! I'm assuming for this you mean AiA Gabriel, and if so, then I think that's an informed guess!

On that topic, though, I really need some of ya'll to be more specific in your asks in you're asking about CANON Mandela characters or AU Mandela characters 😭😭 A lot of the time I have to guess who you're talking about, and my opinions/responses will change depending on who you're talking about. If you asked me what I think canon Gabriel fears, I don't think he fears anything, because I don't think alternates feel fear. But if you're talking about AiA alternates, who CAN have feelings, then yeah I'd say Gabriel can fear something.

This isn't a purely dedicated TMC roleplay/ask blog, and AiA AU content will get mixed in with canon TMC stuff, so if possible it'd really help if you clarified more who you're talking about in your ask (unless it's SUPER obvious, like asking Gabriel about his barista job).

I've just finished reading your story, and I can't even express my deepest sorrows for you and your family. Sadly, I cannot do anything to help, and the most I can do is share your story, which might not get a lot of reach, considering how small my account is.

But to those who see this post, here is Amira's story. It's a very shitty summary, but I think it'll do.

"After her father's passing, Amira found herself taking care of her family, consisting of her mother, who sadly suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes. Amira worked as a teaching assistant while pursuing a master's degree in data science, and also worked as a programmer in a company, all until war came and destroyed everything. Her university, workplace, and home were completely destroyed, forcing them to flee south in search of a safe haven. Now, Amira and her family live in tents for displaced people in Deir al-Balah, where they suffer from water shortages and the spread of diseases, posing an additional challenge, especially for her immunocompromised mother. Amira and her family hope to escape this difficult situation and build a better future. The cost of travel for one person is $5000, and the cost of living is $500 per person per month, and Amira hopes to gain at least €39,000 to be able to escape with her mother."
