does the devil get scared?
I still can't get over how sad both Aimsey and Ros are about their falling out and fighting. Neither of them wanted this and it's destroying them both. I think at the crux of it all the problem is this: They both want to protect but in conflicting ways. Ros wants to be strong and feared. Ros wants to be powerful enough that people don't mess with her or her people anymore. She's so tired of living in fear and more than that, she doesn't want other people living in fear either. She wants to protect everyone so everyone is safe and happy. This has been her motivation from the start. This is why she builds castles. This is why she has to be strong.
Aimsey wants to protect Ros. Aimsey wants Ros to be protected and safe and able to be herself without fear. From the start Aimsey has always been reassuring and protective and very adamant about keeping Ros from harm. It didn't matter the circumstances. If someone was threatening Ros, Aimsey would drop everything and be ready to fight and die for her. And I think more than just physical protection, Aimsey really wanted Ros to be free of the burden of having to be strong.
When Aimsey speaks about only using violence when necessary it really sounds like it's coming from a place of past experience. Aimsey has killed before but out of necessity. It isn't fun for them and they avoid it. When they killed Harry it wasn't triumphant, they were horrified. I think that parallels well with when Ros also killed Harry awhile ago. Ros was ecstatic and bragged about it. Killing someone to Ros means that Ros was capable and able to protect. Killing someone to Aimsey is not an honorable thing, it's a necessity and killing Harry without reason was never something they wanted to do.
Time and time again Aimsey has tried to push Ros away from the notion that killing people and being feared is a good thing. Aimsey hates people who kill for no reason so in their eyes they assumed Ros was simply misguided and didn't know what she wants. If Aimsey could just keep Ros safe then Ros would never have to have the burden of killing.
And so Ros continues her quest to become powerful and strong enough to protect everyone through violence much to Aimsey's dread. And it all leads to the point where Aimsey finally challenges Ros to see how serious Ros is about it. And then Ros kills Aimsey and becomes the very thing Aimsey despises and was trying to prevent Ros from becoming: someone who kills without reason.
