Today, 103 Records presents a special treat: the long lost soundtrack to Nincom’s first ever game, Nightmare Busters!
More well known as an arcade-style 3D action game for Zony’s original FunCentre console, the game’s true origins date back to the mid-to-late 80s; Nincom, newly founded and hungry to prove themselves, set out to make a cutting edge, horror themed title centred around two brave toys named Copper and Little Red Hood, who had to save their owners from far more malevolent playthings still bitter about being abandoned many years ago. Unfortunately, the project’s scope far outweighed what technology was able to replicate at the time; the graphics and animations were too process intensive, for one thing, and the idea to have fully unique enemies in every level proved to be a strain on the memory. Even the music was somewhat hamstrung by ambition; this was the first time the various members of what would become Nincom’s in house band and sound team, Gonkaka, had worked with the Yomeha FY5212 sound chip- or any sound chip for that matter- and it showed in both the roughness of the sound programming, as well as the fact that almost every song used entirely different soundbanks and waveforms. The collapse of the project threatened to destroy the company before it even got off the ground, but thanks to a last minute developer partnership with Gesa North, the company was able to prove their worth (and learn some valuable technical insight) by aiding with the development of their surreal, existentially horrific space shooter “Schadenbergiana”. But you all know that story, surely?
Through our continued publishing partnership and working relationship with both Nincom and Gonkaka, we are able to secure the original sound files for the unproduced arcade version of Nightmare Busters, and are happy to present them for your listening pleasure; devout old timer or fresh face newbie alike, the origins of Gonkaka’s long career are an essential listen for any fan of the band!

This poor clone of Cherryman Generations had little impact on the beloved series
A game that is marketed as your standard fishing game and for the first 20 minutes or so you catch normal fish like bluegill and bass and what have you. But the further you go into the lake you start to catch fish with mutations and it gets more and more intense until you’re pulling in Eldritch horror monsters and sometimes severed human limbs. You realize you don’t recall how you got to this lake in the first place and the objective becomes to find your way back to shore. You have no real weapons but you can throw the creatures you’ve caught far away from the boat as a means to distract whatever is underneath you, bumping into the boat sometimes. Additional items for the game.
A fishing pole with a radar that starts out with just beeps but later includes noises with hidden messages.
A GPS that displays texts and story elements.
You meet other boaters, all from various backgrounds, countries, and time periods. Some are friendly, others want to sacrifice you to the lake monsters.
You can also take the route of sacrificing others to the lake monster.
Or you can assemble a party and work to keep them safe.
The more fucked up looking the fish you catch, the closer you’re getting to a boss fight, which is usually running from something you can only see part of in the water.
????
And that’s my game idea.
Video Game Idea: A Shmup inspired by US labor history, particularly in Appalachia in a way that @afloweroutofstone and @lang-lassiter might dig.
Basically a group of miners working in horrible conditions on a planet far in space go on strike. The corporation who owns the planet collaborates with the Galactic Federation to take ‘em out. The player character is an old; beardy hillbilly-lookin type veteran of some long-ago space war who still owns the ship he used in it, albeit in somewhat ramshackle condition.
It’d be part classic SHMUP/rail shooter/aerial-dogfight-game, but also part resource management as you have to pick up parts from destroyed foes to repair and add on to your ship, because it;s constantly breaking down and in need of repairs.
As for the inspiration…

Epdur - Trailer of a Game that doesn’t exist
This new RPG is about the dream of a knight in a fantasy Renaissance world, in which everyone is masked. He wants to become the greatest hero of all time! ...But is it really worth it?...
In this brand new game, you play as Epdur, the owner of a strange power that makes him able to see spirits and talk to animals. During turn-based battles, he can use the Nima Vision to precisely target some part of the enemy to discover its weak spot. But beware! When an enemy is attacking you, a quick mini-game appears, so you have to be on your toes!
Now go forth! And don’t look behind you, or you’ll be ensnared by the horrific memories of the past, which still haunt you deep in your dreams…
I made this trailer for my first year in video game art. Indeed, this game doesn’t really exist! It was a project to learn pixel art! It was simply amazing to make it and I’ve really improved thanks to it. It's inspired by Renaissance and Medieval History, and by the depths of forgotten French folklore monsters and legends.
