Hello! I wanted to do one of those 'meet the party' introduction posts for PCs and major recurring NPCs. Info below the cut, and best viewed on a blog :D Spoilers beware!

MEET THE PARTY

Robin “Basil” Cantemir (circle of dreams druid/wood half-elf feytouched) (PC) he/him STATUS: Alive CONDITIONS: Dark Power (Dahlver-nar) Cradle-robbed (literal) and forced into fey servitude. Party dad and default party face because no one else is remotely qualified. Romantically involved with Ireena and currently has her as a tooth in his mouth. 

Ireena Kolyana (NPC) she/her STATUS: Deceased CONDITIONS: is tooth A sweetheart. Party darling and moral center before her untimely death, undeath, and disintegration. Currently brought back as a tooth in Basil’s mouth.

Vicelinus aka Vice (grave cleric/variant human aka lizard) (PC) he/him STATUS: Alive CONDITIONS: none Wandering holyman and servant of the Raven Queen. Self serving coward turned reluctant protagonist. Major arsonist tendencies. Party healer and part time devout follower (sorry Raven Queen.) 

Milivoj (champion fighter/human) (PC) he/him STATUS: Alive CONDITIONS: Dark Power (Taar Haak), Dark Power (Tarakamedes) Barovian and former oniichan. Extremely normal mcnormie normalson when he’s not shaking like a frightened chihuahua or being racist against Vistani. Party tank and Basil’s figurative son. 

Roma (gloomstalker ranger/human) (PC) he/him STATUS: Alive CONDITIONS: Dark Power (Osybus) Party dog with anger issues and primary DPS. Raised by wolves and socialized via Fey and it shows. Smells awful.

Maraschino aka Elle aka Kristiana aka Twothka etc. (trickster rogue/changeling) (PC) he/him STATUS: Deceased CONDITIONS: Dark Power (Vaund) Resident carefree prettyboy, wannabe gentleman, and former face of the party. Cluelessly insensitive. Roma’s closest friend in the party before he was consumed by Vaund. Haunts the narrative.

Van Richten (NPC) he/him STATUS: Alive Tsundere old man and verified Sadgirl (TM). Roma and Ez’s mentor, and the former’s favorite person ever.

Ez (NPC) she/her STATUS: Alive  Too cool for the party. Puts “the fool” in “fools go where angels fear to tread.” Roma’s maybe friend and not-girlfriend.

Stella Wachter (Fated Ally) (NPC) she/her STATUS: Alive CONDITIONS: Existing (The Stella Condition) Doing bad! Keeps DDLG-ing the party and giving them psychic damage because of it. Party’s fated ally that they want to teach counterspell to so bad.

Party doesn't have a group name, but the dynamic is four (formerly five) socially nerfed individuals and one (1) token girl. Practiced situation escalators. Frequent bickering and infighting due to conflicting value differences, stubborn egos, and the general stress of Barovia. Extremely rough around the edges, but through trial and error settled on a tenuous alliance and mutual understanding.

I love many things about this character, in case it wasn’t obvious, but here’s a couple. I love how (barring player interference) she decides to straight up solo the final dungeon in the middle of the module as written, barely escapes with her life, and lies low for all of 5 seconds before coming up with a new approach. I love her actually pretty cool trap idea featuring a magic circle in an abbey on the other side of the map from the evil vampire lord castle HQ. I love how they choose to phrase her flaw every time she’s featured in a book, as she is a fascinating combo of brash and reckless and hyper-prepared and ridiculously competent.

I love who she chooses to be and what she chooses to do in the face of living in a setting/plane of existence which is ultimately doomed and damned and damning and dark in a very particular way (but this is a trope I’m a sucker for generally, see: my url). Could all her efforts be considered futile? The answer is a resounding no, never.

I love how in a module absolutely overflowing with wizard-y statblocks for some reason (including the big bad himself), Ez stands out as the only one who doesn’t go for the default fireball spam but instead zaps people with lightning bolts. Absolutely iconic.

The way you get good at art is drawing the same character over and over again, right? These things take forever for me, but I do have one more WIP, very zappy, still early super rough days, under the cut.

Thinking about character idles!!!

I asked some friends yesterday if their pc had a character idle animation + floating talk bubble, like when you sit for a while in a videogame and your party has to sit there, what would their character idle + talk bubbles be.

Roma's would be one of those like, resting squats. the asian squat!! And the motions Roma would go through would be scratching under his chin, scratching behind his ear, and yawning, like a dog. I also imagine when everyone starts moving again he would take half a step to catch up with everyone, because he has to get up from squat position.

Roma's text bubbles would be:

(sniff sniff)

"Woof."

And if he has to wait a REALLY long time:

"Hey stupid? You're not even doing anything?"

Also, in my wildest dreams when characters in your party have shared idle animations (disco elysium style), if Roma and Ez are both in your party, I'd like to think one of the shared idles you could get is Ez using Roma like a chair/footstool LMAO

DRABBLE CHALLENGE 2024: DAY 5 / RING Roma gets new clothes.

Rahadin’s armor fit Roma perfectly--an honest surprise considering so few things did. The fine leather breast piece lay flat and uncomplicated over his clothes. The boots neither squeezed his toes nor chafed his ankles. Even when the collar was clasped fully shut, he felt like he could breathe comfortably. 

For someone who had a lot of complaints about clothes, Roma could admit that these were nice. They would serve as a good replacement for his tattered traveling leathers... though, cynically, Roma was fairly sure whatever benefit they provided would be negated by Strahd’s rage upon seeing that he, of all people, was wearing the chamberlain’s armor.   

Roma fished out the signet ring Rabbit had plucked from Rahadin’s body; like everything else, it was a satisfying weight at the center of his palm. Roma remembered the monster hunter they’d parted ways with just a few days earlier. 

“Knives would like this.” He thought as the raven insignia glinted in the early morning light. “I’ll give it to her the next time we meet up.” 

Roma pocketed the ring again. 

Well. Whatever. Strahd was dead set on killing everyone anyway. Not something a ring and some armor was going to change.
