Aziraphale blinked rapidly. “One of…” he trailed off in realisation. “You—You made…? Before you…?”

The demon turned away. “Yup.” He popped the ‘p’ sound, shrugging. The light in his eyes shuttered a little, flickering behind something deep and aching. Aziraphale started to move his hand before he realised what he was doing, then pulled it back and let it fall into his lap.

“I could show you, if you like.” Crowley’s tone was flippant, but the tension in his posture was unmistakable.

“Show me…?” asked Aziraphale.

Crowley held up a hand, flexing his fingers in a jerky wave. “The nebula. If you wanted.”

Aziraphale’s eyes widened. “Oh. Oh.”

Crowley waited, hand help up in offer. Aziraphale’s heart hammered in his chest. He felt altogether too human, some unknown chasm gaping at his feet.

“…alright.”

The angst is killing meeeee!

I’m going absolutely feral thinking about Crowley’s reaction to the bookshop fire and not being able to find Aziraphale because here’s the thing:

Crowley had absolutely no way of knowing how the fire was started or by who. All he knows is that the bookshop is on fire and Aziraphale is Gone.

Crowley knew hell was after him and it’s not a hard leap for Crowley to think they might have been after Aziraphale as well. So it’s absolutely logical for him to assume that the fire burning down the bookshop is Hellfire. Holy Water for Demons and Hellfire for Angels as we know destroys them completely — no second chances or re-corporations to spare. Crowley sees the bookshop on fire and thinks Aziraphale is destroyed and gone forever.

Secondly, the last call Aziraphale placed before the fire was to Crowley, Crowley was having his own issues yes, but he hung up on Aziraphale moments before the fire began. So for all Crowley knows, Aziraphale could have been calling him for help, for backup, to save him, and Crowley let him down.

So in those hours after in the bar, after the fire: Crowley thinks Aziraphale is gone forever, and that it’s his fault.

We all know Crowley doesn’t actually shred the plants, right? Like he takes them into the other room and makes Big Scary Noises, sure, to scare the remaining plants. But you just know that he actually takes the bad plants and sets them Outside, pats them on the head, and says “You rebelled. You are now Fallen. Congratulations” and sometimes he decorates them with old pairs of sunglasses and tiny leather jackets intended for French bulldogs. Like I’m sorry but if you don’t think those plants are 100% a form of projection and coping about his issues with Heaven then you haven’t met Anthony Janthony Crowley

Archangels Gabriel and Michael sat glowering at the nearby hovering screen. It was emitting chimes practically nonstop.

“Why doesn’t he just miracle all of them in at once?” Michael asked in frustration.

“You damn well know why,” Gabriel muttered. Ever since that horrifying day that Aziraphale stood in a column of demonfire and then belched out a gout of it at them, it seemed that he was going out of his way to just piss off the management with incessant spam.

Gabriel sighed in relief when he saw that the onslaught of messages stopped for a bit. “Anyway. I was thinking that if we do want to arrange for the Big One™, we might want to–”

Ding!

Michael glanced at the screen. Then she shrugged and shared a nod with Gabriel. “Fair.”

“… we might want to have you get a few more ‘contacts’ in low places, if you know what I mean,” Gabriel continued.

Michael took a breath to respond.

Michael stared at Gabriel, her eyebrows twitching up questioningly.

Gabriel shifted uncomfortably in his chair, “… well, now he’s just being petty. Come on, Aziraphale.”

Michael decided to ignore it and move on, “I may be able to make some arrangements. Even if the holy water didn’t work out as planned, the exchange was still marked as satisfactory…”

Ding!

The two archangels scowled at the readout. “Something needs to be done about him,” Michael said.

Gabriel raised his eyebrows in a doubtful look. “Soooo… you saying you wanna be the one to confront him about it?”

Michael sat quietly for a moment, glancing aside nervously as she recalled the image of Aziraphale’s gleeful, hellfire-engulfed features.

Rama and Sita never overhear the dhobi before her pregnancy comes to term

1. Most of Kaikeyi’s power died with Dasharatha and his love with her, but still she has enough influence to overhear the rumors that spread through the city–and, more importantly, to ensure that the wells and taverns that Rama visits in disguise do not mention them. 

Let him confront those ugly truths once his wife delivers Ayodhya its heirs and if he should object, then let him consider: she has done him so many offenses already; what is one more?

2. The child – no, children, and fine sons, too!–are born, and Kaikeyi lets it be known that to challenge their legitimacy would be to deprive Rama of the heirs he loves so well. For a time, it works: Ayodhya loves Rama enough to allow him his happiness.

But all too well she knows it will not last. Did she love him, too, and still prove the cause of fourteen years’ unhappiness? So too will they turn on him, and his blameless queen; unless Kaikeyi can seek to do otherwise. 

3. Crowds always need a scapegoat, and too well Kaikeyi knows one that will suffice. Public opinion has forgiven only because of Rama’s request; and so it is all to easy to sow a word here, a suggestion there, that all the rage and mistrust they feel towards Sita ought to be directed towards the real instigator of mischief, who lives in the palace still, having escaped any punishment for her crimes. 

It works; of course it does. Kaikeyi has lived in Ayodhya for almost forty years, and knows it like the palm of her hand; and just as in the palm of her hand, she can read the signs of her downfall in the crowds’ angry faces. 

4. Before Rama must answer that he allows the criminal responsible for his father’s death to live simply because she is his stepmother, Kaikeyi volunteers herself to return to Kekaya. Too long she has lived apart from her mountains, she says wistfully; and her brother longs for her company. 

She will listen to no protests, not from Rama, nor her fellow wives–and Ayodhya, pleased with itself, forgets its complaints against its queen entirely. 

5. The night before she is to leave, Bharat comes to her for the first time in fifteen years. He knows, of course; any son of hers must. She managed to teach him at least that much. 

“If you expect me to forgive you, simply for what you did for bhabhi-”

“I did nothing but act according to my own nature,” Kaikeyi interrupts coldly. As much as she longs for Bharat’s return, she does not want it to be under such terms. “Manipulation is my only skill; surely I must use it to relieve my own boredom.”

“You’ll never change,” he declares, and still his voice is thick with anger. But he touches her feet before he goes, and in the morning, stands on the stairs and watches Kaikeyi’s departing palanquin until it fades out of view.
