But yk what my ideal "popstar" mdzs au would be? Wq, Jyl and mianmian in a band, The trouple (tots not biased)

-Basically Jyl would be in the band because she genuinely has an interest in music (also because her parents did not... love her choice of becoming a music major, so she needs to get money somehow)

-I'd imagine she'd be the lead singer, cause why not?

-Wq wouldn't really be in it for interest, she actually wants to become a doctor though med school is expensive as hell and ever since granny Wen had retired she's been working 10 jobs at the same time. Someone save my girl.

-She'd play the guitar

-MianMian is just some guy who's in the band cause she's close friends with jyl, and she's also a music major.

-I'd imagine she'd have beef with her past employer tho (The Jins) and its comical.

personally i do think julian bashir is trans, but not in a way that sublimates his genetic alterations into a trans allegory. i think he's disabled and trans at the same time, but i think his rebellion against his parents--the symbolic death of his old self with the name change--that's not about gender, for him, at all.

it's about the incredible violation of autonomy he experienced as a disabled person under the knife of a eugenicist society. it's about the need to reclaim some, any, of the agency that was so completely stolen from him by his parents.

it's about discovering that his entire self was deconstructed and reconstructed, without his knowledge or consent, for the express purpose of being less of a burden on his parents.

because let's not forget that the death of julian's old self was not his decision. it was his parents who killed the old self and created a new one.

let's not forget that human society in star trek is still recovering from the eugenics wars--that just because it's post-scarcity doesn't mean it's a utopia.

let's not forget the multiple episodes where bashir is forced to confront the fact that his "success story" is truthfully a gross reminder of how deeply his society (and his family) hates disabled people, not only shown in how they tried to fix him, but also in the fact that the process so rarely works as intended, yet is still done anyway--and the failures and the ones too far gone to save are locked away! with no connection to general society, and only the bare minimum provision for their physical needs, with no privacy and no autonomy!

and let's not forget that julian sees these people and is torn between the empathy he has for them, and his urge to fix them. and he goes through with this urge on Sarina, "fixing" her to conform to his idea of what she ought to be, treating her as a problem to be solved, objectifying her via "my ideal woman was trapped in this disabled body/mind and i saved her," thus continuing the cycle of violence, because even he can't conceive of a world where the disabled do not need to be fixed. where the violence done to him was wrong. fuck man

Jiang Fengmian broke it because he realized that Wei Ying was right. He couldn't let his daughter marry someone who obviously didn't want her and more importantly might fail to protect her the way a husband should especially since as a woman in ancient china, the person 'responsible' for her would be her husband and her husbands family. The only person person who blamed Wei Ying was Madam Yu Ziyuan because of her prominent and unfair hatred towards Wei Ying. Just like the way she blamed him for the Wens attacking the Jiangs when no, the blame of that attack lies solely on the Wens. Blaming a kids actions as being the cause of inciting conflict is Dictatorship 101. It didn't matter what the Jiangs did. The Wens would have attacked them regardless, especially since Madam Yu refused to lower herself the way the Wens wanted her to. The way Wang Lingjiao was trying to. Blaming Wei Ying for the Jiang Massacre would be like blaming the destruction of Gusu by the Wens on Lan Zhan for trying to protect the library. The only ones to be blamed for all the destruction are the Wens. No one else.

Kirk being the exception in everything for Spock in this book is absolutely crushing.

Early on they establish that Spock maintains a strict distance from his other crewmates, and other beings in general as being a touch telepath means he has to maintain shields against their emotions and thoughts. Braithewaite shaking his hand is such a faux pas because of this, Vulcans are known to be touch telepaths and he should know better! Kirk and Spock are both irked by the gesture to the point that Kirk notices Spock is giving Braithewaite a hard time (politely).

Kirk is shot on the bridge and without a second thought Spock is there, already trying to staunch the bleeding, holding Kirk in his arms (using his first name a lot too…) and drops literally every shield he has. After Kirk’s death, Spock is in charge of the Enterprise as it was Kirk’s last request that he take care of his ship, but Spock’s already planning on transferring off as soon as possible- it doesn’t occur to him that he could stay there under a different captain, which would be the most logical course of action. Jim’s death ends that part of Spock’s life that takes place on the Enterprise.
