Anime/Manga: Kimetsu no Yaiba Pairing: one-sided Sanemi/fem!Reader; Genya/fem!Reader Additional tag: Modern AU; aged-up characters; unreliable narrator; a n g s t  &  t r a g e d yâ
Summary:
Sanemi felt awful. Revoltingly so. His throat seized at the amount of self-disgust and âloathing he felt, eyes unseeing and filled with tears as he clutched the letter to his chest, cursing himself over and over for imagining his name written on the paper instead of Genyaâs.
âbut itâs time to face the truth: Â Â Â i will never be with you.â
- youâre beautiful/james blunt
He knew from the beginning that what he was feeling was wrong. Not because she was five years younger than him â practically sharing the same age as his younger brother, Genya.
Sanemiâs heart, however, secretly longed for something as bright and warm as the sun, as calm as a bubbling brook, and as pure and innocent as the girl â no, woman  â who managed to return the smile on his brotherâs face and his by extension after the tragedy of losing their mother and siblings to an accident no one wanted to happen.
[Name] had been the Shinazugawa brothersâ pillar during those trying times, always spending time with them and making sure that the two would continue to function as proper human beings after the funeral. Sanemi, however, noticed that Genya was the closest to her between them-
Dearest Genya,      How do you think we should tell Sanemi ah, should I call him oniichan already? about us?
This was just one of the many letters she sent his little brother â the second to the last one, short and simple and so utterly straight to the point, and it made Sanemiâs vision blurry with unshed tears.
He shouldnât be reading this, shouldnât be intruding on something Genya and [Name] privately shared. But Himejima-san, her caretaker, had given him the box containing the letters exchanged by the two, silently urging the grieving Shinazugawa brother to read them all.
And so he did, but Sanemi had no idea on which emotion should he feel as he carefully read letter by letter.
The letters were even arranged by date. Damn Genya and his proclivity for order. They really were hopeless romantics - writing letters to each other instead of calling or texting like normal people did. But perhaps that was what made the love between them flourish like faithful romances back in the old days. The amount of dedication to make time to express their feelings in writing, as well as the patience to wait for each letterâs arrivalâ
Sanemi realizedâ knew that he should be the one envying Genya and not the other way around.
To have found someone who shared what you felt was truly a gift from God Himselfâ
Sanemiâs hands trembled violently, making him drop the box unintentionally. Pieces of paper floated down the floor, piling atop each other. He cursed himself for being so careless, for disrespecting the memories of the departed by being so fucking careless with everything fragile.
Genya was gone, and [Name], tooâ
âWe believe it was a mistaken identity,â said the police. âWe have the suspect in our custody, Mr Shinazugawa, and ready to file murder against ââ
âYour brother shielded Ms [surname] with his body, Mr Shinazugawa, but the bullet went through him and into Ms [surname]âs.â
âWeâre very sorry for your loss. We will contact Mr Himejima about thisââ
An anguished sob slipped past Sanemiâs lips, the pain in his chest making him curl on himself. Teardrops stained the letters but he couldnât stop himself, couldnât stop crying oh so brokenly for the ones he loved but left him.
With unsteady hands, he gathered the letters and returned them in the box â by date, just as Genya had done.
      (When he was still aliveâ)
A piece of paper the shade of Genyaâs favorite jacket caught Sanemiâs attention.
It was folded into the shape of a flower, carefully so, and Sanemi couldnât bring himself to unravel it and read its contents despite knowing that it was the last letter [Name] had sent Genya. The paper looked delicate in his callused hands, and the fear of accidentally tearing it apart seemed to stop Sanemi from taking a look. It was special, this last letter â that much the eldest Shinazugawa child knew.
Sanemi had unfolded the paper before he knew it.
And he felt horrible towards himself (never them, no), appallingly so, upon reading [Name]âs final letter to Genya.
Sanemi was awful. Revoltingly so. His throat seized at the amount of self-disgust and âloathing he felt, eyes unseeing and filled with tears as he clutched the letter to his chest, cursing himself over and over for imagining his name written on the paper instead of Genyaâs.
Youâre disgusting, you shouldâve been the one who died and not them, they deserve to live and not you, not you, never you, you weak, repulsive, patheticâ
     I love you, Genya.
How he wished it would have been âI love you, Sanemi-san.â
