It's not just that Mario tries to reassure his lil' bro. It's that... his face looks completely different. All cheerful, with big baby eyes (+ widened pupils?) and grand smile. He looks like video game Mario more than ever. All just to make Luigi smile.

I like to interpret it as...

Mario forgets whatever fear he might have, forgets himself entirely, and finds comfort in making his little brother smile through chaos. He's happy as long as his brother's okay and happy.

He would do anything for him ❤️‍🔥
