Instagram Recommendations for Korean Learners

1. redhair_enne 빨강머리N is a collection of short comic strips with a few panels each. They comment on the daily life of one character, who tends to be very relatable. The dialogue isn’t overly complicated and fairly easy to follow along for most upper beginner to intermediate learners. 2. dbqudwo333 (유병재) 유병재 has a lot of fun interaction with his fans and fellow entertainers that results in simple jokes often relating to his likeness appearing frequently throughout the internet that he posts on his insta. It’s fun when you catch an interesting play on words and self-deprecating humor is almost always enjoyable. 3. do_hada do_hada is a motivational intagrammer who posts commentary and quotes on life and how to live happier. In a few panels, this resource will help inspire you while you’re learning Korean. Vocab tends to be less basic due to the subject matter but is also not overly complicated. 4. gooooseok gooooseok’s short comic strips cover anything from current movies to life struggles. The commentary is simple and entertaining and the accompanying drawings are enjoyable. Intermediate learners will find this instagram a fun way to learn. 5. insight.co.kr Insight Korea’s an instagram posts news stories from the newest celebrity army enlistment to the installation of free wifi at the Han river. This is a great resource to not only develop language skills but to also learn more about current events in Korea as they develop.

i recently got asked how i get such bright lighting for my posts and i thought it would be a good opportunity to tell you all how i edit my pictures! i’ve recently changed how i edit my pictures and it works so well so why not share! it was inspired by how one of my favourite studygram accounts (tasneemstudying) edits her pictures! check out her account and she has a highlight on her profile where it shows how she edits her pictures!

General

i use the app snapseed

in the past i’ve used VSCO but i’e found that you can do a lot more with snapseed and the pictures always turn out better

i wouldn’t necessarily recommend using filters or presets for editing because in my experience every photo needs to be edited differently

for example, i always edit each photo individually 

try to get as much natural lighting as possible 

i know it can be difficult in winter so i would recommend that when you have decent lighting, take as many pictures as possible when it is good

take multiple pictures of the same notes/set up but from different angles so you have options when editing

1. Curve Function

open the snapseed app

insert the picture that you want to edit

crop/rotate etc. if needed

use the curve function to change the lighting and make it brighter (this is particularly useful in winter when lighting isn’t as good)

you just need to play around with it until you are happy with it

2. Decrease Saturation

next go to the tune image tool

scroll to saturation

reduce the saturation completely to -100

it should be black and white now

3. Return Saturation to Certain Areas

this is perhaps the confusing bit but it’s very important:

return to the main screen

in the top right hand corner, click the button with the layered squares and the arrow

then click view edits

this will take you to the point shown in the lefthand picture

tap on the ‘tune image’

click on the paintbrush option

then click the invert button and the mask button

this should get you to the point shown in the righthand picture

this means that the paper and handwriting in black will be very defined and not have their colour distorted by any editing

but at the same time you can erase the low saturation to make colourful parts of the notes stand out

make sure the brush setting is at zero

start going over the areas with colour

the red will go away and the colour will no longer be black and white

make sure to zoom in close so you can get really close the the edges of the coloured areas

do this for all areas of colour

if you make a mistake, you can simply increase the brush setting to 100, paint over the area with the mistake and this will make it unsaturated again

4. Increase Brightness

then return to the tools menu and click on the ‘selective’ tool

select a spot that you want to brighten and tap to add the spot

swipe left and right to change the brightness

you are probably going to want to increase the brightness, particularly of the background

add more selective points wherever needed and repeat with the brightness

if you want to change the extent of the selective effect do a pinching movement

5. Add the Watermark

return to the tools page

click on the text tool

type in your watermark or name

choose the font and colour

place on your photo

6. Save!

save your picture!

and you are done

Daily Blog.

Hi, since I just finished binge watching Naruto Shippuuden, I am now starting on taking classes from edX. Unfortunately, the broke me can't afford to get certificates from them. Nevertheless, I did find applications similar to this.

Udemy - I haven't really started a class on this app, but so far there's a variety of classes you can choose from, some are free while some are paid. The certification is the same with edX, only paid classes will guarantee you a certification.

Saylor - I plan on studying here next. All of the classes here provides free certification. The only downside is the poor selection of classes you can enroll in.

ERYUTech App - this is an app for the channel ERYUTech, and this is hosted by a Filipino. They provide webinars of various topics. Certification is also available, but only when you've pass your outputs/exam. I attended a webinar here, about Filipino Sign Language, so far so good (I still haven't submitted my output tho, oopsies!)

Facebook Blueprint (Blueprint) - according to Google Play, this app is still undertesting period. But as the name suggest, it's owned by Facebook. Furthermore, this course app focuses on teaching classes related to using Facebook Marketing (similar topics to that). I guess if you're interested in being a pro in marketing at facebook (which I plan on doing, lol) this app will really help you. It also provides a free certificate, as long as you "pass" the exam.

I honestly found more course apps while I was searching online, but majority of them are available using the browser. Which, unfortunately, I cannot dive into so much because my pc's broken.

hi! do you know any vocabulary books? or websites/apps(besides a dictionary) that teach vocabulary? a lot of the vocabulary on tumblr/etc idk if it's accurate and i want to reach N4 soon. apologies if this sounds rude ^ ^ こんばんは

It doesn’t sound rude at all! I double check Tumblr vocabulary too (especially with natives) and make sure to get mine double-checked because it’s really easy to just put anything on the Internet these days. ✍🏻

Good vocabulary books are usually just textbooks! I’m a huge fan of the Genki series because I think their vocab is broken up really well. If you’re specifically studying for N4, I’d recommend getting your hands on N4 vocab books! 

新完全マスター has a whole series for vocabulary, kanji, and grammar. The books aren’t too expensive either!

日本語総まとめ also has a ton of good books for vocabulary that are geared towards N4

I also really like the 日本語能力試験完全模試シリーズ because just like the previous two, it has books geared towards each level and you can pick what you want to study (so there’s a whole vocab book)

Truthfully, I recommend heading over to Kinokuniya’s website and searching “N4.” Tons of information comes out for books you can find and order online! 

As for apps, I love news apps! You can usually find kanji + vocab in tandem, and it’s a great way to practice your reading skills as well. Totally recommend! Apps like NHK for School or Easy Japanese are great for this. I also really like StickyStudy (I think it’s only available for iPhones though?). There is TONS of vocabulary broken up by JLPT level.

I hope this helps! My favorite vocabulary builder is WaniKani, but it does cost a bit of money to get past the first 3 levels and unlock the whole 60 level program. Definitely worth it in my opinion, but it does take some time to complete as well.

Movies:

• El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) This is available on Netflix and I’d suggest watching movies with subtitles. If you’re able to, there’s a chrome extension you can download called Language Learning with Nextflix where you can have subtitles in both your native & target language

• I also suggest watching any movie you’re familiar with like if you love Disney movies you should find the Spanish version of them
