I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!

This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.

Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!

I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.

killugon: You’re probably a huge fan of friends to lovers

leopika: you think there’s nothing more romantic than people who have gone through some shit in their past finding solace with each other. Or, you see them as the 2 dads of the group and like their parental authority. Or you’re really into when people “argue like a married couple” but like, in a way where they still like each other.

hisoillu: what’s better than one fucked up sociopath? two fucked up sociopaths! You probably like it *because* their relationship is kinda messed up but that doesn’t mean you can’t make fluffy content for it xD

hisochrollo: you’re really into the whole concept of fightfucking and hisoka being a horny bastard all the time. Also bubblegum clown x goth is the prep-goth solidarity we need.

hisomachi: you’re less about agressively horny hisoka, and more about flirty hisoka. You also are probably caught up with the manga. That, and Machi is probably your favorite phantom troupe member.

hisobisky: you exclusively ship this when bisky is in buffsky mode. That says enough.

kurokura: enemies to lovers but also like, fuck, they’re on an even playing field with kurapika’s abilities and that car scene.... You’re probably sick of the fandom calling you out for shipping this even though like most of the fanfic is AU anyways.

kuraneon: you’re totally into the whole “bodyguard” romance type thing and might also be into the “spoiled rich one x commoner” trope a lot too.

kuramelody: you just want kurapika to take a break and stop being so self destructive. You also probably recognize how important melody was as his companion during the yorknew arc.

pakumachi/shizumachi/pakushizu/any mito ship: you’re probably a nblw or wlw.

phinksfei: bash buddies = smash buddies. Thanks for coming to my ted talk. (oh, and size difference too)

uvoshal: that scene where uvo kisses shal had you <333 and you love a good size difference xD Also, rip.

nobupaku: you saw their noses and were like. fuck it. this is a ship now.

ponzupokkle: you probably shipped them because of their hats as a joke during the hunter exam arc and then your eyes popped out of your head when they returned in the chimera ant arc. And then you proceeded to get your heart broken. I’m sorry.

knushoot: you love a good “acquaintences to rivals to comrades to lovers” fic where they both have mutual trauma.

knovpalm: You want palm to stay 10000 miles away from the boys and also think knov is sexy.

merukomugi: you loved the redemption arc and unlikely bond between them and probably cried at the end of the chimera ant arc because they were so important to each other and became casualties.

merupouf: you probably have a draft of a hxh fic where the chimera ant arc is easily avoidable because pouf isn’t being an annoying simp causing issues in the second half.

kitepitou: enemies to lovers but like. the morbid kind. If I had to take a guess you probably make headcanons where pitou acts more catlike than she does in canon and most of these revolve around her annoying kite.

tonpa x leorio: you’re a troll who likes crackships for the sake of crackshipping.

Killunary: you really like the childhood friends trope and probably really like canary as a character and wish she was used more.

Amanary: you also like canary a lot but you either stan killugon too much to break it up OR you started shipping it the moment that they had that compliment scene during the election arc.

Allushi: you read a lot of fics where gon killua alluka and zushi hang out together. Probably into modern aus too.

Gonlluka: what could be better than one cinnamon roll? TWO cinnamon rolls. Bonus points if they’re always driving killua nuts xD

gingkite: you like that they have history together and kite really admires ging, and the part where ging made accompany send gon to kite instead of him made your heart swoon because this implies kite is his other parent.

remember the joke for leopika about the arguing like a married couple but still liking each other? Yeah, that, but they *actually* hate each other. It’s a bit of a stretch but for any of the three of these you might actually headcanon them as exes rather than currently in a relationship

paricheadle: the election arc was your favorite and the fact that pariston was being a dick just to mess with cheadle.

pariging: You read the manga and have that one panel memorized. Which one? You may ask... “I’ll play with you personally from now on. Until you beg you to stop.” “So you’re finally going to pay attention to me?” “You? We’ll see about that. I might be doing it for my own fun.” You also trash on both of them constantly and may/may not actually believe pariston is gon’s mom

gingcheadle: I’m 99% sure you think cheadle is gon’s mom and love the belligerent sexual tension between the two of them during election arc.
