1994 flyer for UK record label Soul Static Sound.
Soul Static Sound was a weird little label. It started out showcasing bands aligned in some way with the riot grrl scene, such as Skinned Teen, Huggy Bear and Kicking Giant. But it also made room for other kinds of bands well-removed from mainstream pop sensibilities, as shown here in a catalog listing releases by New York experimental rock band God Is My Co-Pilot, ragged pop enthusiasts Comet Gain and a couple of Sebadoh offshoots (Unconvinced and Sparkalepsy).
Where it got really weird is when the label turned hard in the mid-to-late nineties away from guitar-based sounds towards post-rock and electronica. (That was somewhat of a trend back then. Even Mr. Indie Pop himself, Mike Schulman, turned his attention from Slumberland Records for a bit to spotlight this newer music via his offshoot label, Drop Beat Records.)
This flyer dates from what I’d consider the heyday of Soul Static Sound, also listing what looks like a few gigs near the bottom. I’d gladly travel back to May 29, 1994 for a chance to see Pram and Prolapse on the same bill.
Five Days of Yam-Pak Movies ~ Day 1: Madam Yun // 芸娘 (dir. Chu Kea / 珠璣, 1960) - starring Yam Kim Fai (任劍輝) and Pak Suet Sin (白雪仙)
Summary and more information under the cut!
Summary Inspired by Shen Fu/沈復's Qing Dynasty autobiography Six Records of a Floating Life/浮生六記. Madam Yun focuses on Shen Fu (Yam Kim Fai) and his wife Yun (Pak Suet Sin), who live in married bliss with their children at the former’s familial home. However, they fall foul of the machinations of Shen Fu’s younger half-brother, who has designs on the inheritance, and are summarily kicked out. The young family struggle to adjust to their poverty, but their plight is worsened by Yun becoming chronically ill; these desperate straits result in Shen Fu having to leave his family behind in search of paying work. Thankfully, after all his efforts he is able to find a benefactor, and the family is reunited under one roof (which is, sadly, not what happened in real life).

I watched this movie during lunch because I have no friends /j and it turned out to be a really interesting documentary.
I know it’s from 2013 but it got me more into Cantonese films lately, I might seek some recommendations from my mom. Ngl, I always used to think that exclusively media from Britain/France/Czech Republic “fit my personality better” 😭 And I’m half Chinese so I always found it easy to just ignore that I’m Chinese. But I’m so into the Cantonese film lore now.
