On picking up skills from reality shifting-

Short answer? Yes, you can.

Long answer? Much like in our CR, skill acquisition comes through practice practice practice, with different skills needed for each. Therefore, just scripting that you Know something, like, a language or an instrument will not just transfer over. With practice and usage in your DR, however, you can learn and remember what feels or sounds ‘right’ when reinforcing knowledge in your CR. Shifting is also, (I think) just in the mind, so more physical skills like fighting, health, etc will need more time for your CR to get fit or accustomed to changes before you see any changes.

I like to head canon that Max's parents weren't abusive, they just died when he was 3 and his aunt and uncle took him in. Max's aunt and uncle are extremely neglectful and never home. When they are home they're drunk and sometimes hit Max. This also ties in with Mr Hunnynuts was the last thing his parents gave him. Hence why Max still see's "dad" as a positive.
