I love how much Heartstopper emphasises queer COMMUNITY and how important it is to see other people like you. Nick finding the courage to hold hands with Charlie after seeing an older gay couple. The rainbow ocean reaching out to Ben at the queer art exhibition. Coach Singh telling Nick about her wife and promising to protect him from homophobes on the rugby team. Nick watching Tara and Darcy kissing on the dance floor and realising he can be both happy and queer. Elle meeting other trans people at the art school and feeling at home.

Heartstopper constantly shows that surviving as a queer person is a group effort and it’s not only accurate, but comforting to queer youth. It’s a plot point that only a queer person could have the conscience to write.

Heartstopper literally stopping my heart every episode. Picture me crying like a child every ten minutes. I can’t deal with that. And then the Taylor Swift scene in the last episode ? That killed me.

The show is everything to me. It does feel like a warm hug, a sunny day, a safe space.

I dream and wish for a day where I can find myself in a friend group like that. I long for finding this found family.

I am so glad this show exists like that. I know it sounds cheesy, but the world got a little bit more colorful today.

The Barbie Movie.

A small, non-comprehensive list of things that stood out to me (spoilers? Kind of?)

The soundtrack

All the jokes that played off of what it was actually like to play with barbies (the pool & ocean being flat, the cups having no drinks in them, the shower having no water, etc.

TRANS BARBIE

The choreography

The "I Am Kenough" tie-dye sweater

Barbies of many shapes and sizes! All very beautiful!

THE ENDING, OH MA LORD. Both the way the story concluded really beautifully, but also the ending joke that no one was prepared for—

Just... everything about Ryan Gosling's performance

Kate McKinnon playing the deranged, "ugly" Barbie

In the same vein, that movie would NOT have been complete without representing the kids who played with their dolls "too hard" (cutting their hair, bending them in weird ways, etc.)

Acknowledging that Barbie did in fact mean a lot to some girls. This movie was geared towards everyone, whether you grew up loving Barbie or hating her.

The mom and her daughter

The fact that when Barbie was starting to become "defective" and/or when she was in the real world, you could start to see her ""flaws"". Like I noticed in some scenes her eyebrows were unplucked and no longer perfectly sculpted, or her skin no longer perfectly smooth with foundation.

It was clear that SO much thought and research was put into this. I couldn't believe how many references there were to specific clothing items, certain playsets, etc.

The fact that Barbie and Ken DIDN'T end up together, and that Barbie DIDN'T indulge Ken in his flirtations (is that a word?) even once

THE FACT THAT I WAS SO CLOSE TO ACTUAL TEARS LIKE SEVEN TIMES???? LIKE WHAT????

The weird dark humor coming out of nowhere

The fact that Barbie never once looked at the human women (who were "imperfect" in comparison to her) with disgust

......the moment between her and the woman on the bench 😭😭😭

The mom's rant about how hard it is being a woman (esp a mother) and how you can never win 🙌🙏

The misogyny in the Real World was so well done. It wasn't overexaggated or over the top it was just NORMAL EVERYDAY LIFE

THE JOKE ABOUT HAVING A MAN SIT YOU DOWN TO TALK ABOUT THE GODFATHER ASDJGKDLW

The moment where I went "OH so THAT'S where the mugshot memes came from"

Ruth Handler <3

The fact that everyone came to the theater dressed either in pink or Barbie-like attire :)

💞💝 What if I take you to the Barbie movie and we hold hands and then make out in the car after? And what if we’re both girls? 💞💖

i LOVE greta gerwig for getting men mad and saying things like 'barbie is sexist and anti-men' or that the film is too girly and not interesting enough for men cause i genuinely can't name all the films written by men, directed by men, produced by men, most of the cast members were male (and half of them served jail time) and displayed such disturbing disgusting and abusive narratives (which weren't needed for the plot of the film AT ALL) that i literally got triggered and couldn't even finish the whole thing where as in barbie 'the worst it gets' for men is ken being just ken and not enough for babrie - which ends up getting resolved at the end.

i honestly love the trend to dress up in silly little outfits for events like going to a movie or a concert. like yes besties go all out on that eras tour outfit. dress up in pink from head to toe for the barbie movie. love to see it

Thinking about Weird Barbie and how she's the very obviously queer outsider of the Barbie world, she straddles the lines between Barbie and the Real World. She's the most aware of the performative nature of it all. She supports Barbie while also gently mocking her panic at losing the hyperfeminine perfection. Her weird house is also home to the discontinued reject weird Barbies, the outcasts (including very gay earring Ken) who never fell into either the original matriarchy or the Kentriarchy brainwashing.

The other more classically heteronormative and beautiful Barbies both pity and fear her, and at first the narrative pities her as well. She's the vessel of girls going weird and crazy and feral on their dolls and that's amazing. Weird Barbie is aware of who she is and how the world sees her and she loves it. She's Weird Barbie and She Owns It.

I didn’t realize it at first, but do you feel like Allan could be a stand in for nonbinary people?

BARBIE MOVIE SPOILERS:

He’s not a Ken, He’s not a Barbie, he’s just Allan He’s the only Allan and he doesn’t really understand it. He moves more like the Barbies do, but he’s not brainwashed by the Kendom. His appearance is similar to the Kens, but he’s not a part of the Kendom. He’s something else, somewhere in the middle.

Also they kinda show Allan not fitting into a gender binary. We see femininity and masculinity represented in Barbie and Ken, both going through the extremes of them. We see this in every Ken and every Barbie, but not Allan. He even works with the Barbies when dismantling the Kendom since it effects him negatively too and he doesn’t like it. Like how the patriarchy also effects non binary people and people outside the gender binary negatively.

You could say he leans masc/is masc and that’s true, but the Kens don’t really seem to accept him or include him as one of them. He has Barbie-like mannerisms but he’s not included with the Barbies ever, he’s not invited to girls nights. He’s just, Allan.

honestly not even surprised that it was Stereotype Barbie who was enlightened. because she’s a stereotype. stereotypes are basic, flat, reductive. making margot’s barbie not even have a specified job, to not even be a leader in any capacity, is brilliant because she has all that space to grow into a full person from her own self-made stereotype, from how she first thought of herself, while also recognizing she doesn’t have to be a prodigy or trendsetter or a world changer to be considered worthy of being alive.

What About The Kens?

I'm already seeing guys complain about the Barbie movie end, how they wanted Kens to be equal in Barbieland but were only given a small part on the Cabinet.

That's the point.

You're meant to feel bad for the Kens. Believe me, women aren't partying over the 'Returns to Matriarch' ending. Some will be, but the ones who also clocked the meaning behind it won't. Most women will also feel bad for Kens. Because it's an exact parallel to how women are treated in reality.

Men, you're meant to be upset. You're meant to question it. Because you're meant to feel it, and feel what that is like, so you can finally understand women. You're upset at seeing it in a movie, now imagine living it in reality. That's being a woman.

Kens were shit on so you could feel what it was like for women this entire time. Kens were being used as a placement so you could see yourself in a woman's shoes. A world dominated by the opposite sex. When Ken leaves, and sees male presidents (All men) for the first time, men being doctors and lawyers, etc, realising he is more than just a prop for Barbie, that was on purpose. Because that is the feeling that Barbie gave to women. It's why you cheer for him at first before he goes a little overboard.

It's exactly why the real world was an exaggerated Partriarchy and Barbieland an exaggerated Matriarchy. Neither wins. Neither is equal. None of them change for the better. It's why you should want women in the real world to be respected, and Kens in Barbieland to be respected.

The thing is, women also didn't win. Not in the real world. In Barbieland, yes, but not anywhere else. The real world didn't change. But you didn't notice, did you? That Gloria (The mother that helped Barbie) also didn't get a position on the Mattel board? It was still all men? Her idea was ignored until it made a profit, and the men will likely get the credit? She'll still just be the receptionist? The women representing the real world didn't get anymore opportunities, neither did the men in Barbieland.

I was hoping that Gloria would be offered a position on the board, and that the Barbie Cabinet would introduce another entire Cabinet to represent the Kens, but neither happened. They're complete mirrors.

But which one did you actually notice? Which did you actually care about? Now tell me again the ending was unfair. Because it was. For both parties. That's the point.

The difference is, Barbieland is fictional. You will walk out of the theatre with the reassurance that at least it's not real. Women won't. Women can't. Companies not giving women equal opportunities or voices isn't fictional, and that was just one example. There are no women presidents (USA at least) for us to go look at in the real world. We don't have somewhere to go to realise it could be different for us like Ken did. Barbie and make believe is all we had when we were kids, or even now.

You're supposed to be mad, just not at the movie.

ethan hunt is actually a perfect protagonist because he’s a huge bitch, distractingly pretty, and divorced—which are all essential—but also he kind of wants to end it all but god won’t let him die, is in a situationship with his best friend who definitely would, is a rebecca ferguson simp, can never decide if he likes his hair to be long or short so he’s always growing it out and cutting it again, has more trauma packed into his tight little frame than should be possible, and is obsessed with always wearing a cute little jacket

Imagine actually being so evil that you'd rather make sure your writers suffer financially instead of just paying them the pay they deserve. Hell truly has some seats reserved already, holy shit.

maybe i’m just being pretentious here but for as thematically rich and layered of a film nope is once you start peeling back the layers i feel like it’s also not a hard movie to quote-unquote “get” if you use like, even just two of your brain cells lmao. jordan peele’s use of symbolism is incredibly intelligently crafted but it’s also like, not subtle at all (and that’s not a criticism i think it really works and he pulls it off really well lol) so the fact that there are apparently people coming out of this film not understanding what it’s about or thinking the gordy plotline is superfluous is genuinely baffling to me
