a while back my best friend linked me to a thread on homemade My Little Pony transformation hypnosis tapes

that’s a really loaded sentence so let me ease into it

they were like, hour long recordings you were supposed to lay down and listen to and focus on nothing else, that started off with some relaxation techniques then eased into like, “feel your hands becoming hooves. remember pinkie pie’s happy memories. imagine yourself literally becoming pinkie pie. imagine your pink mane. you are literally pinkie pie”

all with the goal of putting you in a mental state where you were convinced you were this cartoon pony. and it was full of people like “wow! this was so relaxing. i felt like i literally Became rarity”

the problem is that human brains are kind of, buggy? so people, especially if they listened to the tapes too much, started like, accidentally going to this mental state they’d created at random inopportune times. the thread was suddenly full of people desperate to know how to stop it because they were turning into rainbow dash in the middle of driving on a highway to work, or whatever

anyway, i’m just burdened with that knowledge forever, now. i think about it a lot

Reasons why George Blagden’s ‘Drink With Me’ video is heartbreaking

It’s Grantaire’s solo that didn’t make it to the final cut of the 2012 movie. And George sang it completely in character. It was calm and peaceful, but with undertones of fear and sadness.

It’s June 5th (or 6th in the east), the anniversary of the Paris Uprising of 1832, which the Les Amis de l'ABC could’ve been part of have they actually existed 184 years ago. GEORGE POSTED IT AT 1 A.M. A VERY APPROPRIATE TIME, PROBABLY THE TIME THE AMIS STARTED SINGING ‘DRINK WITH ME’.

George took the video at the intersection of Rue Rambuteau and Rue Mondétour, THE SITE OF THE BARRICADE. THE SITE WHERE THE LES AMIS DE L'ABC SUPPOSEDLY FELL. Let that sink in for a moment. 

For the reason above, “will the world remember you when you fall?” is very painful because the June Rebellion of 1832 is a very obscure piece of French history, and it is Hugo’s ‘Les Misérables’ that gave this event widespread renown, as Hugo himself witnessed the battles at the barricades. (Side note: Do you know why they call it ‘Rebellion’? It’s because it failed. The republicans lost. If they didn’t, it would probably be called 'Revolution’.)

getting dressed up for a special event

My sociology professor had a really good metaphor for privilege today. She didn’t talk about race or gender or orientation or class, she talked about being left-handed.

A left-handed person walks into most classrooms and immediately is made aware of their left-handedness - they have to sit in a left-handed seat, which restricts their choices of where to sit. If there are not enough left-handed seats, they will have to sit in a right-handed seat and be continuously aware of their left-handedness. (There are other examples like left-handed scissors or baseball mitts as well.)

Meanwhile, right-handed people have much more choice about where to sit, and almost never have to think about their right-handedness.

Does this mean right-handed people are bad? No.

Does it mean that we should replace all right-handed desks with left-handed desks? No.

But could we maybe use different desk styles that can accommodate everyone and makes it so nobody has limited options or constant awareness that they are different? Yes.

Now think of this as a metaphor. For social class. For race. For ethnicity. For gender. For orientation. For anything else that sets us apart.
