Characters have hijacked the chapter, and now the writer is just getting towed along for the ride.
I'm not sure what this chapter was originally supposed to be, but somehow it's turned into "Girls' Night: the ex-Senator/ex-Jedi-Sith's widow/ex-Jedi-Sith's padawan/Jedi dropout/Rebel agent Version," because Padmé and Ahsoka decided they wanted to hang out and chat.
I feel like Harold Lloyd or Buster Keaton.
My mom has zero sympathy. "Enjoy the ride! 😂" she says.
Teeny II-XIV spoiler below, don't click if you don't wanna know!
Oh yeah, and then Vader decided to stick his nose in, because why wait until next chapter like you're supposed to, when you could make a totally unplanned appearance in the current chapter, instead?
Random two o'clock a.m. thought of the day:
Just why. Why is the BBY system still such a thing in SW. Why is there apparently no standard calendar system that does not reference a date far in the future of the prequels? And how the heck has this remained the state of things for over 20 years now?
Just saying, it's particularly heinous when you're writing a fic where the Battle of Yavin will never even happen.
In which Padmé makes a difficult decision, and Vader spends some time with his apprentice.
One major disadvantage of entering the Jedi Order at the ripe old age of nine:
You miss the intro classes where they teach Stop, Drop, and Roll.
That knowledge would have come in handy on Mustafar, you know? To be fair, Anakin was also freshly down a bunch of limbs, but still. He had already dropped. All he had to do was roll.
Google, dear, we need to have a word about what you consider to be synonymous ideas. Because you've been bolding some stuff that has literally nothing to do with the search terms I entered. And it's annoying enough when I google something about RNA, and you bold the word DNA in every result, but I get it, they're both nucleic acids. I don't agree with you, but I get it.
However, this is getting a bit ridiculous:
Suggestions are welcome if anybody knows of a more accurate search engine than this stinker!
Yellow is an interesting color choice for Sith eyes. Red eyes are quite common for fictitious "bad guys," but I don't think I've seen yellow much, except for Sith. It's cool for two reasons:
One is that yellow links nicely to the whole "fear-anger-hatred" thing because of the classic association between the color yellow and cowardice.
What my nerd brain finds is cooler, though, is that yellow can also mean danger in the natural world. Like bees, wasps, etc. So Sith are following a sort of Müllerian mimicry: looks like something that can hurt you, and it will. Sith are totally the yellowjackets of the Force user world. (Either that, or yellowjackets are the Sith of the wasp world....)
The way Vader speaks differently from Anakin, not just accent but diction, makes me wonder how the heck he picked that up. Did Palpatine decide, "You must speak properly and menacingly, my disappointingly casual apprentice"?
Or, oh geez, did Vader actually start voluntarily looking up higher-level vocabulary and practicing stiff, formal sentence construction, just so he could avoid sounding like Anakin?
Well, he's nothing if not extra.
When Obi-Wan inevitably finds out about this voluntary study in the Force ghost afterlife, he really wishes he were sufficiently corporeal to bang his head on the wall, because how many years did he spend trying to help Anakin with linguistic skills, and now he decides they're actually useful?
I love it! Yoda and Sidious as Dooku's feuding co-parents who hate each other 😂
Realising that, from a certain point of view:
Ventress is Anakin's lineage great-aunt, but he's also her lineage uncle.
Anakin is both Sidious' apprentice and his great-great-grand-apprentice. Or step-great-great-grand-apprentice?
Dooku is both Anakin's great-grandmaster and his lineage brother.
Savage is Dooku's apprentice and his lineage nephew.
Savage is both Anakin's lineage nephew and his lineage great-uncle.
Ventress is both Yoda's and Sidious' grand-apprentice.
Luke is Ahsoka's adoptive nephew, and her lineage uncle, and her lineage great-great-great uncle?
Luke is also Dooku's lineage brother.
And Ventress' lineage uncle.
Anakin is Luke's father, his lineage brother (sort of in two ways?), and his lineage great-great-nephew. Oh, and his lineage great-great uncle, in a way (Anakin = Sith lineage brother to Dooku, who's Luke's Jedi great-grandmaster, in addition to being his Jedi lineage brother).
I think all of this makes Padmé pretty much everybody's in-law???
And it might require a bit of a stretch, but I'm pretty sure there are also multiple ways for Maul to be Obi-Wan's lineage relative?
Sending this your way .. about Nur and how horrific it is… tie in to your reference about Nur in Fortunes Rule and how Vader has a lot to explain and atone for when it comes to the whole torturing and entombing
Jedi esp younglings 🤯
Hey, thanks! That little bit about the entry point and the security will definitely come in handy, as I am planning to have a Nur chapter at some point down the line.
Honestly, I may have gotten myself in a bit over my head with the whole Nur thing. I didn't realise just how nasty it is when I mentioned it back in Part II, so, uh... yeah, that's going to be fun to figure out. Fortunately, it will be a while before that arc, so there's some time to figure out how to approach it.
The final chapter of Part II, in which Vader's hope and Ahsoka's fear are confirmed, and Padmé realises the truth about her Imperial contact.
Illustration for Fortune's Rule, done in watercolor (mostly Daniel Smith, which I adore for the saturated colors), and then enhanced using the Google Photos editor pop setting. (OG version shown below.)
I like the softer OG version, but the vividness of the enhanced version seems more appropriate for Ahsoka. Less passive, maybe. Something about the OG reminds me weirdly of a Victorian maiden. I think it has to do with the structure of the tunic/dress/thing? (Very vaguely reminiscent of the late 1870s/1880s natural form era dress style?) And maybe the downcast eyes and quiet expression? And I think the higher contrast and brighter colors of the enhanced version help to counteract that effect.
I didn't do a pencil sketch, just started by putting down paint. This piece felt truly middle-schoolerish at first (and, okay, throughout most of the process), but I was pleasantly surprised by how much it [eventually] improved! The strictly-profile view added to the awkward, amateurish feeling, even though I actually wanted to do that view, but I think it worked out fairly well in the end. Her arms turned out a bit too short (or her torso is too long), but I'm super pleased with the shading, especially on the tunic/dress/thing!

A hodgepodge of things relating to Fortune's Rule, my Star Wars fix-it fic: behind-the-scenes-type writing stuff, maybe some sneak-peekish bits, art that may or may not make it into the story, and thoughts and questions about the SW universe. Plus, probably, some memes and other random stuff as well!
