Pax has posted this wonderful fanfiction while on break and i couldn't be more in love Highly recommended!
Yes, Iâm on break but Iâm too fucking excited right now. Iâve been kicking around a fic idea since April when a friend mentioned it. Iâm finally getting around to it and Iâm FUCKING excited!!!
Itâs a high school AU featuring songs by The 1975, Bastille, Imagine Dragons, and Marinas Trench.
Itâs very song and lyric heavy, but itâll make sense during the fic. This one is going to be REALLY long.
I wanted to give you guys a sneak peak. Anything in asterisks will be italicizes.
Welcome to AP Biology two. I hope youâre as excited as I am about this course and are willing to work hard. Itâs an enlightening class and will open a lot of doors if you put effort into it,â the teacher said, smiling at the class, âI also like my students to work with people they arenât familiar with, so grab your belongings and stand in the back of the room. Iâve already paired everyone up. When you hear your name, please go to the table with the corresponding number.â
Yuuri picked up his backpack off the floor and hugged it to his chest. He was the youngest in the class since he was in the accelerated program and didnât know anyone. While he was one of the smartest in school, it often put him at a disadvantage as the others were usually older than him. He recognized a fewer upper classmen but they ignored him. He was used to it though, only speaking with his classmates when he was grouped with them for projects or tutoring sessions.
But when the door opened and *he* walked in, Yuuri wanted the floor to open and swallow him whole.
Yuuri had been infatuated with the grey-haired senior the minute heâd laid eyes on him the year before. He had gaped at him, wondering how such perfection could exist in one person. Theyâd passed in the hallway occasionally and exchanged civil greetings that would leave Yuuriâs heart racing out of control. But a class with him was beyond a dream come true.
âSmith and Moore, table one.â
Yuuri focused on the floor tile in front of him but caught himself peeking to his right, stealing glances at the boys talking near him. He was so happy he was on the verge of giddiness. Trying to fight the smile threatening to break out, Yuuri paid attention to the teacher and waited for his name to be called. The next time he looked up he thought he was going to melt when he saw the heart-shaped smile. He was beyond gorgeous, bordering on the line of godly.
âDuncan and Roberts,â the teacher said, looking up when he saw three students step forward, âErica. Table two.â
The crowd in the back thinned as names were called out and the tables filled. Yuuriâs heart was beating in his chest when there were only three tables left and the object of his affection was still standing. His friends had already been called so he was standing next to Yuuri. Yuuri looked up and saw beautiful arctic blue eyes shift to him before the smile appeared again. He was mortified he had been caught and stared at the ground again. He almost had his nerves calmed when he heard his name, but the one called after his paralyzed him.
âKatsuki and Nikiforov, table twelve.â
*No wayâŠ*
Yuuri jerked his head up and stared at him. He knew by the grin from the older boy he must have appeared shocked at the turn of events. When a hand was held out in front of him, Yuuri nodded once and clutched his backpack tighter before walking to the table. He sat on the stool and dropped his pack to the floor, gripping the concrete surface to steady himself. He felt a presence in the stool next to him and gulped before he looked at his new lab partner.
âHi,â he said, giving Yuuri his infamous heart-shaped smile and holding out his hand, âIâm Viktor.â
âI know,â Yuuri said, gripping his hand gingerly and shaking once, âYuuri.â
âNice to meet you,â Viktor said, âIâve seen you around but weâve never been properly introduced. Iâm looking forward to this class. How about you?â
âNo, maybeâŠâ Yuuri muttered before meeting Viktorâs gaze, âYes.â
âWorried about it being too difficult? Iâve heard youâre really smart,â Viktor said, âJeff and Kyle said they hoped they got you as a lab partner, but looks like I lucked out.â
âOh,â Yuuri said, his heart dropping to the floor, âYeah, lucky you.â
Yuuri was used to this feeling though he didnât want to experience it with Viktor. He had English class with Jeff and Kyle the year before, being teamed up with a couple projects. While they didnât make him feel taken advantage like most left him, Yuuri still felt like he carried most of the workload. He had hoped it would have been different with Viktor but fate was conspiring against him.
âWhy does that sound bad?â Viktor asked, his brows knitting in confusion.
âJust used to the âYay, Iâm teamed up with the smart kidâ thing,â Yuuri mumbled.
Yuuri turned his attention to the front of the room and took the stack of papers from the person beside him. He took a packet and passed the rest to Viktor before looking at it. The syllabus was the largest one heâd seen and left him wondering if he had exceeded his academic limits, but the guidance counselor said the class would be perfect for him. He listened to the teacher drone about coursework, their textbook, labs and expectations for the year. He was so absorbed in the lecture he jumped slightly when he felt a tap on his arm. Looking over, he saw Viktor slide a scrap of paper to him. Tilting his head, his spirits soared when he read the message.
*I didnât luck out because youâre the smartest kid in the class. I did because youâre the nicest. Iâd really like for us to become friends. Would you like to get a milkshake after school and talk about class? My treat? Has to be chocolate though.*
Yuuri smiled and scribbled a short note before passing the paper back to Viktor. He listened to the teacher go over the supplies and the fees for the class. When another tap touched his arm, he reached down for the paper and read it.
*Chocolate is my favorite too. Let me know if your mom says itâs ok. Meet you at the fountain outside five minutes after school ends. I hope you can go.*
Itâs incredibly important to me that the anime decided to include this scene that wasnât in the manga. In the manga, Maomao does pass out in Jinshiâs lap after saving him from what was obviously an assassination attempt.
HOWEVER, the manga cuts off at this point, keeping strictly in Maomaoâs perspective, and cuts straight to when she regains consciousness in bed after being treated for her injuries. The manga doesnât show how she got back. They SAY how, and she briefly mentions, âwow that must have been embarrassing; he carried me back,â but we donât SEE it. We donât get to feel the true impact of what that means. But the anime DID show us, and holy shit.
They SHOW us how taboo this is. They show Jinshi carrying her out of the temple, after a public attempt on his life.
They show us the shock and horror on Lakanâs face as Jinshi silently walks past him. Horror at the state his daughter is in, horror at another manâa man with a status he could never dare to questionâstaking such a public claim over his child, horror at the fact that he could never have this level of closeness with her (as Maomao would never allow it).
Everyone hides their gazes, as is their custom when someone of his rank passes by, but the air is different this time. Jinshi is furious, heâs terrified, and he could not give a single shit about how inappropriate it looks to these palace officials.
The shot that slowly follows her trail of bloodâeven though itâs a small detailâthat in particular leaves such a intense impression of how poignant this is for him.
Maomao talked about this scene in the manga like it was nothing to her. She did what she set out to do: she saved the person who was targeted by the attack. She didnât even know the target would be someone she knew. But she has no idea that this happened afterwards as a result of her bravery. To her, it likely wasnât even an act of bravery at all. She acted on impulse; she did what she knew was the right thing to do.
The anime didnât need to include this, because the manga didnât show it. But damn, Iâm so glad they did.
How do you get over chapters 401/402?
