Also Now That We Have The Context, Akutagawa's Comeback “do We Need Any More” Is So Much Funnier.

Also now that we have the context, Akutagawa's comeback “do we need any more” is so much funnier. He was really racking his brain to come up with another citation from their earlier fight that would have resulted as equally iconic

I would like to make my contribution to the Chuuya has reading glasses headcanon:

Chuuya calls Ango "Doc glasses." This started when he just got reading glasses, and was insensitive about needing them.

But one day, there's a joined meeting between the division and Ango sees Chuuya with reading glasses—

He opens his mouth to speak. Chuuya sees him, realizes the situation, and before Ango can attempt to tell him that he no longer has the right to call him "Doc glasses," Chuuya very calmly looks down at what he's reading, glasses remaining, and says, "if you make one single comment, then you won't need glasses anymore." He looked Ango in the eyes. "Ever again. Got it, Doc Glasses?"

Ango has enough self-preservation to agree. And thus, the nickname remained.

Oh and don't even get me started on Dazai. What he did would make way more sense coming straight from the Mafia, letting everyone kill each other. It doesn't feel like something Dazai would have done already being with the Agency for two years, and he's never killed anyone in present (he tried with Fyodor but...yeah. Also it's fyodor it's fair). And then him talking to Kunikida about the dangers of his ideals...it's all things that would make sense happening after he recently met Kunikida, not someone who's been in this organization for two years now.

Having the events of Dazai's entrance exam take place before the start of the series rather than during it really makes Kunikida's character make so much more sense. Specifically why, at the beginning of the series, he was really hesitant to save Atsushi, or have Atsushi save Kyouka. It's not out of rudeness or apathy. He won't let himself care, because he tried before. He tried to bring up a kid that had a bad life, and it only ended in failure. The events of the Azure Messenger arc really shape Kunikida's character into being someone who wishes he was a hero, but isn't. That he can't save everyone. So when Dazai saves Atsushi, at first, Kunikida doesn't want to grow close or allow himself to care because he feels that this too is only going to end in failure. Hence what he tells Atsushi about he and Kyouka both drowning if there isn't enough room on the boat (the metaphor admittedly makes more sense when he said it). It just adds so much in respect to his character if it happened before the events of the series as opposed to during it, because then it just makes Kunikida out to be super uncaring. But he's not. He just doesn't want to get his hopes up until he can truly accept the fact that this time, it might end better.

OK I'm probably not the only one who noticed this, but I was watching the epic livestream, and in My Goodbye, Athena goes "one day you'll understand, but not today for after all you're just a man." And you know what? One day, he does understand. When he's no longer a man, but a monster. Only then, when he (believes) he's lost his humanity, only then does he understand what Athena was telling him. But he can't, not while he was a man.

And of course then there's the whole cruel irony of Athena becoming more empathetic but that's a different post.

Anyway, I think Epic is pretty neat

Dead apple really fits in perfectly with bsd, because we know and love this movie, but ask anyone who watched it and they couldn't tell you what the hyuck it was about.

I cannot put into words how much this line from the fifteen light novel means to me.

I Cannot Put Into Words How Much This Line From The Fifteen Light Novel Means To Me.

One hundred matches. They played close to a hundred games against each other. Because they're both just fifteen year old boys. Fifteen year old boys who were forced to grow up way too fast in a world that only dealt them trashy cards. Two boys who claim to hate each other...who found an equal in each other. Someone else they could be a child with. And in middle of a dangerous mission, a mission that involves Chuuya believing he's a god of destruction, a mission that involves Dazai searching for the old boss because he was forced to false-witness his murder, in middle of all of this, they played a hundred games at an arcade. Because they were just kids.

Ok so this isn't really stupid, but I do wonder if Dazai took the time to explore the world and people a bit.

Like Odasaku wants him to help people, but he's spent so much time entrenched in darkness, so he needs to start small by helping old ladies cross the street and listen to them talk about their grandkids.

Maybe he helped out at a school to learn a bit more about children.

Volunteered at a soup kitchen to observe those in need in a much different way than he's used to.

Would just sit in a park to watch parents playing with their kids, couples walking together, etc.

He's always said he wants to die, but this is different. Sort of like what he said about observing death up to close to understand what it truly means to live, but the opposite. Observing life up close to understand what it truly means to die.

And finding that maybe, he doesn't want that. Maybe, living in the light won't be so bad.

what's your stupid thing you think Dazai learned during his two years in hiding while keeping himself busy

YES. It feels like so many people entirely miss the point of Dead Apple, saying "it's not that important but Dazai and Chuuya." Like, the entire point of the movie is the fact that the whole time, Atsushi doesn't want to kill anyone. He doesn't understand why they'd have to resolve to killing, and more importantly, his power wouldn't come back to him because he hasn't truly accepted it. And then, he learns that he did kill, as a matter of fact. He killed because of the power of the tiger. He killed because he wanted to survive, something which has always been a main point of Atsushi's character. And only after that does he become ok with his power and what it did for him, and only after that is he ok with killing Shibusawa. But noooooo, the entire movie is just about that one scene.
