Here's the infuriating thing though, most of America ALREADY DOES live next to train tracks, or not far away. It's not a matter of building more lines, it's a matter of using them. America has the largest railroad network in the world by a huge margin; it's almost the size of the next two largest networks combined. The problem is that, unlike those countries and nearly every other industrialized nation, American railroads are owned and operated almost entirely by for-profit corporations whose sole concern is to be as profitable as possible. And moving freight is far more profitable, and far less hassle, than moving people (the accounting methods used for the first point are...not always the most objective). So these 6 massive duopolistic railroad companies choose to only move freight instead. As far as I know, there is nothing legally stopping these freight railroads from running their own passenger trains, like they used to do before 1971; Brightline in Florida and the Alaska Railroad (where I was a conductor briefly) both do quite good passenger business, and Brightline doesn't even own its tracks. In fact, when Amtrak first started up in 1971, there was a fee that railroads had to pay in order to get Amtrak to take over their passenger trains. Some railroads, like the Rock Island, could not afford the fee; others, like the Southern and the Rio Grande, chose to continue to operate their own passenger trains for a few years. But eventually they too threw in the towel, and now Amtrak is all we got.
"ohhh wahhh the problem with building out america's rail network is that nobody wants to live next to train tracks-" I DO BITCH!!!!!!!! #I<3INDUSTRIALNOISES #SEXWITHATRAIN
Sometimes there are good days, and sometimes there are the "I just discovered this train car includes toilets in the private rooms" kind of good days.
Only a few more hours until we meet again, oh mighty dining car ❤️
PSA: If you struggle with anxiety, or social anxiety, or hate airplanes, the sleeper cars on Amtrak are seriously a lifesaver. Even coach is so much more low key and relaxing, with tons more space.
If it climbs out of your Margarita and starts to kiss ya,
it's the drink whore!
For Sure!!
Attended pride today and AMTRAK WAS THERE
We here at amtrak love the gay community, you make up a decent chunk of our ridership
So as far as I can tell everyone loves trains here. I love trains too, to spread the train agenda we make taking the train better than driving. Cowards say we do this by improving trains, they are wrong, we make driving so awful that there is no choice but to talk the train. My proposition: In Beverley hills there is a six way all stop sign intersection, we replace every roundabout with one of these, driving will be so awful everyone will start using public transport instead of cars, this is how we spread the train agenda.
Amtrak you are famous to any small town that has a heavily used track for being the trains of meat inconvince. I see y'all and shed a tear of joy.
@batshit-auspol congrats ur famous
Can't sleep; thinking about watching powerful freight trains pass the windows of the coast starlight observation car, noise dampened but somehow still so intense
And the size, you can see the whole height of a car stacked to the brim with lumber whipping past only feet away at a relative speed of at least 130mph and it's as big as a house
Goodbye #dc , riding the rails to #phillidelphia #philly #amtrak #unionstation (at Union Station, Washington D.C.)
I have fond memories of my Mom taking me on the train from our home in Indiana to downtown Chicago. Ever since, I have loved the sound of a train whistle.
I've taken my GrandGirls on train trips: some long, some short. Each time on a train I feel so relaxed and comfortable.
