Danny's parents are freaking out, they already failed once with Vlad (which is how AFO became aware of their work) and if it doesn't work, there is going to be dire consequences (like being turned into Nomus). So Danny goes inside the portal and to fix it (maybe he has some small energy quirk that he thinks will power it/or he's just quirkless), and gets ghost powers. Danny sees what AFO is doing is wrong and keeps his powers a secret so he can start putting a stop to him

the best part about this is actually how it ties to DP and sets itself in the BNHA universe. I could see this happening and it seems perfect!
