"No, please? Stay the night?"
You gave the best puppy dog eyes you could as you looked up to your partner. Your everything. Your Bucky. He was enlisted and getting sent out first thing in the morning. The two of you had gone steady a few months ago, but you'd known him for years before that.
"Dolll, I-" Bucky snorted and held you close to his chest, his forehead resting against yours before he pressed a small kiss to the tip of your nose. His lips gentle, and his touch was like clouds. "How can I say no t'you?"
A small chuckle left your lips as you ushered him into your home. You agreed that, after the war the two of you would get married. Move in together.. Ah, well, you don't wanna dwell on that right now. You're going to focus on the man right in front of you and that's all.
"You can't say no t'me!" You hugged his waist before pushing him down to the couch. With gentle touch, you grabbed his coat and threw it to the side. He's complained before about how it was tight and hot in it. "And I thank God for it everyday"
"You're so bad, hun"
"You love it"
In a graceful movement, you sat nicely on his lap. Your hands cupping his face as you looked over his face. Trying to remember every wrinkle, every hair, every bump and crevice. You weren't going to see him for months..
"What's on your mind, sweetheart?" The man in front of you asked with a worried smile. His hands were placed on your waist, making sure you weren't going to fall or move or anything of the sort. "Why're acting like 'n eager beaver?"
".. You promise you'll be back, right?"
A beat of silence spread between the two of you. James Buchanan Barnes left wordless for a moment. His shoulders tensed, no one would notice. No one but you. He licked his top lip before he captured your lips on his.
"I promise." He whispered against you. "I'll be back quicker than y'can say my name"
You ran a hand through his hair, it was so soft under your touch. You're going to miss moments like this. The sweet man you met gradeschool. You remembered when he was a lanky 12 year old boy, all confident at being 'the fastest kid in the whole school.' Honestly, when you were kids you didn't like him. He was a popular kid in school, everyone loved him
Except you. Which was strange for Bucky. So, of course, he made the great decision to talk to you in the library. You were reading The Great Gatsby.. Which was a heavy book for a 12 year old to read. But that just made Bucky even more enraptured with you.
Ever since then, he'd been glued to your side. After that, you, Bucky, and Steve had become a close knit trio. Everyone knew wherever you went, Bucky and Steve were close behind.
It was only inevitable that you'd fall for one of them.
Ah, well. That's enough reminiscing.. The front lines were the one place you wouldn't be able to follow Bucky to. You weren't enlisted, nor did you want to join the army. Much too violent for you. You wanted to open a bookshop for crying out loud!
"You'll stay safe though, okay, James?"
"Oh no, y'called me James, am I in trouble?" He had his signature smirk on his lips, trying to lighten the mood. It was a, uh, a failed attempt.
"Promise me."
His gaze softened as he kept his eyes locked on yours, his thumbs rubbing small circles on your back. Something he learned to soothe you one day after you had a low grade on a math test.
"I promise, doll."
A small sigh left your lips before you kissed his forehead softly. "I'll send you flowers, 'kay?"
"No."
You huffed and leaned away, your brows furrowed at his quick answer. A small frown on your face. "Why? Embarrassed of me?"
"Not one bit, doll, don't even joke like that," His grip on your waist tightened before he pulled you closer. "I don't want'cha to send me flowers, 'cause I want'cha to save that for our garden."
A small, confused chuckle left your lips. "Garden?"
"When we live together after the war," He whispered and kissed your lips, a quick soft one. "We'll have a big garden, somethin' we can take care of together."
"Buck-"
"We'd have the best front yard in the whole neighborhood," His eyes bore into yours. His blue eyes locked on yours as he looked at you.. Only love and admiration. Unlike his usual teasing nature, he looked at you as if you're the only person in the world. As if he wasn't leaving the next day. In fact, he looked at you as if you'd spend your whole life together..
That was his plan, at least.
"So no flowers, got it, sweetheart?"
You rolled your eyes and leaned forward, your forehead resting against his. "I got it."
"Doll?"
"What is it, Bucky?"
"I love you."
Your heart skipped a beat before a giggle escaped your lips. Your arms wrapped around his neck tightly as you placed scattered kisses around his face. You've said you "i love you's" before. But the magic hasn't weared off, not for you at least. Not ever.
"I love you too, James Buchanan Barnes. I love you more then you'll know."
The two of you sat there in a comfortable silence for a while. Quiet conversations between you two before Bucky carried you to your room. Where the both of you cuddled all night and whispered sweet nothings to each other.
You kept him close, stealing away any and all his warmth in the dark of the night.
Sadly, the morning came by, and your Bucky was swept away. Of course, he spared you a kiss before he had to go, promising he'd be back before you could say his name.
If only that promise was kept.

This piece is cover art for @thescholarlystrumpet's wonderful 1940s priest AU fic: For Loving One (Rated E on AO3, mind yer tags) ...which you can and should read, asap. Chapter 10 (of 16!) just went up today, and yes, Strumpet does have the whole fic already written and ready to post, so you won't get abandoned on a cliffhanger. For my part, I wanted to call upon some 1940s aesthetics with a little bit of film noir and some Leyendecker-esque vibes. I hope you like my interpretation! Alsoooooo take some time to check out all the things I painted into that stained glass. I had a hell of a time designing it. --- --- --- If you like my art and want to keep seeing more of it, support me! ko-fi | prints | commission --- --- --- Detail shots from the high-res:

The Delhi Durbar Tiara
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝒪𝓌𝓃𝑒𝓇𝓈/𝒲𝑒𝒶𝓇𝑒𝓇𝓈:
♕ Her Majesty Queen Mary (1910 - 1946): The tiara was designed for Her Majesty Queen Mary as a fitting celebration of His Majesty King George V new status as King and Emperor.
♕ Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1946 - 2002): The Queen was loaned the tiara from Her Majesty Queen Mary. The only time the Delhi Durbar Tiara was seen with the Queen was during her South Africa tour in 1947. It remained in her possession until her death.
♕ Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (2002 - 2005): The tiara was passed down to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II when her mother Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother passed away in 2002, along with the rest of the Queen Mother’s jewels.
♕ Her Royal Highness Camilla The Duchess of Cornwall (2005): The Duchess was loaned the tiara from her mother-in-law Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for the Norwegian State Visit & also her first tiara appearance as a member of the British Royal Family.
𝒞𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃 𝒴𝑒𝒶𝓇:
The Delhi Durbar Tiara was designed as a fitting celebration of His Majesty King George V new status as King and Emperor. The tiara was designed for Her Majesty Queen Mary in 1911 by Garrad.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝒟𝑒𝓈𝒾𝑔𝓃:
The Delhi Durbar Tiara was designed with remains of another tiara & some other smaller jewels - a tradition of Queen Mary when creating tiaras. The remains used were from a diadem tiara made for Queen Mary by Boucheron in 1901 after a visit to South Africa, when she had been given a present that consisted of diamonds from the De Beers Mine. The new Delhi Tiara was set in both platinum & gold but also had diamonds that formed lyres & s-scrolls that would overlap diamond festoons. The tiara is a complete circle that wraps around the head. The Delhi Durbar Tiara was originally set with 10 Cabochon Emerald Drops that are located on top of the tiara. These emeralds are a part of the famous Cambridge Emeralds set that once belonged to the grandmother of Queen Mary. Mary had acquire the emeralds after they were left to her late brother Prince Francis of Teck’s mistress Ellen (neé Constance) Needham. After Mary acquired the emeralds, they were used to create the tiara but were removed from the tiara in 1922. The emeralds were not sat aside though! The emeralds were used for the dangling emerald drops in the The Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara or they are used for uprights on The Kent Diamond and Pearl Fringe Tiara left to The Duchess of Kent. The Cullinan III & IV Stones were used as temporary centerpieces of the tiara. The 94.4 carat pear-shaped Cullinan III stone was an upright in the top center & the 63.6 carat Cullinan IV stone was placed in the front center. The tiara could have the 2 stones that could be worn or could be worn with 1 stone. There is another centerpiece for the tiara, as no one has used the Cullinan stones since Queen Mary. This tiara went under minor changes before Queen Mary loaned the tiara to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. While the tiara has not made an appearance after 60 years in the vault, it made a new appearance with Her Royal Highness Camilla The Duchess of Cornwall for the Norwegian State Visit. This tiara has always seemed in medium size when past queens have worn it, but it’s actually very large in size. The tiara has a layered effect that is created by the festoons on top of the scrolls.

♕ 1911: Her Majesty Queen Mary’s official portrait for the Coronation of her husband His Majesty King George V. 2 Portraits of the Queen have been done wearing the tiara in 2 different styles: one portrait has the tiara with emeralds & the second portrait has the Cullinan Stones.
♕ 1947: South Africa Tour worn by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
♕ 2005: Norwegian State Visit worn by Her Royal Highness Camilla The Duchess of Cornwall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
𝐹𝓊𝓃 𝐹𝒶𝒸𝓉𝓈:
♕ In 1910, it was decided that the Crown Jewels were not allowed to leave the United Kingdom.
♕ Even though she had paid for her own hew crown his coronation, the Tiara was designed for Her Majesty Queen Mary. This meant that this tiara was not a part of the Crown Jewels.
♕ Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II allowed The Delhi Durbar Tiara to be exhibited. After 60 years in the vault, the tiara would make a new appearance on a new member of the the royal family.
♕ When The Duchess of Cornwall was seen wearing the tiara in 2005, it caused quite a problem with the public. 3 Queen’s have been possession of this crown & now a duchess marrying a prince (who is the heir to the throne) for both their 2nd marriages? The public did not agree & did not like the way the tiara look as people believed it had been altered. The tiara was not altered at all & is still a circlet style tiara.
…why the fuck wasn’t this in the 2024 Batman: Caped Crusader?!!! It’s literally in the 1940s this would have been hilarious!!!
in the 1940s the word “boner” used to mean “huge mistake” and it still pretty much means that
Redraw of/inspired by @jadenightshade’s GO drawing which can be found in the link below. I ended up drawing it as the wives and trying to make it look circa 1940’s because why not? Enjoy Crowley taking a well deserved break 🧡
Title Cards Drawn by Cartoonist Milt Gross for the 1942 Film Roxie Hart. Love these so much they have his natural trademark screwball energy.
A Illustration by Abner Dean for Life Magazine for some articles over George Orwell’s Novel “1984”.I may be alone in this camp but personally I think Dean’s art style suits Orwell’s novel perfectly it’s cartoonish and has a slight unsettling feel to it just fits the vibe of the book perfectly I wish he illustrated the full novel he did a couple more illustrations for this article though.
Color Barnaby Strip By Jack Morley who did the art for the strip during 1946-1952 while the strips original creator Crockett Johnson(known for creating Henry and the Purple Crayon) began to focus on writing kids books I honestly really enjoy the way this looks Morley was very good at imitating Johnson’s style and the color choices are nice.
Here are some illustrations from cartoonist Abner Dean’s(1910-1982) book “It’s A Long Way To Heaven”.Abner Deans a cartoonist I’ve become a bit obsessed with for one thing he’s very mysterious there’s not a lot of info on him but mainly for his art obviously just from these alone you can tell Dean had quite the imagination his surreal cartoon drawings in this book can range from interesting to disturbing but no matter what I love them all and I’m a bit upset we can’t know more about this artist.
Gloriously Cartoony and Fun Covers by Cartoonist Roy Wilson(1900-1965) aside from the great cartoonish character designs and posing the colors to are also nice to look at there well balanced and very pleasing to the eye nothing feels to bright.
