I'm in my Maiko feels today, and I gotta say: we don't talk enough about the fact that Mai is too shy to say she loves Zuko to his face.

On The Headband she says "I don't hate you." On The Beach she says "I care about you." In the finale she says "I actually... kind of like you." The ONE time she full on says the word LOVE, is at The Boiling Rock, when she's talking to Azula.

She can call him her boyfriend, act flirty, make out at any time, say he ripped her heart out with the break up letter and jokingly "threaten" him to never do it again... but she just can't say "I love you." She literally started blushing when she tried in the finale, and couldn't get the right words out.

It's such a cute little detail. She's not used to expressing how she feels, so she doesn't know how or when she should say it.

She'll 100% just let it slip someday, in some casual conversation. Zuko is gonna stare at her all wide-eyed and happy, and she's just gonna feel her very soul screaming in agony and embarrassement.

Mai's Crimes :

Being goth

Sighing

EATING

Having a not good childhood

Talking to a male that is not her boyfriend

Being angry at being wrongfully accused of cheating

Not jumping up and down in glee because her boyfriend gifted her something he picked up from the ground

Poking boyfriend in shoulder

Joking with boyfriend

Being angry at being dumped over text

Allegedly having sex with boyfriend

Not unlearning years of propaganda in five minutes

Joking with boyfriend AGAIN

Not liking when boyfriend yells

Throwing a sheet of paper at boyfriend

Sitting in a pallenquin

Asking for stuff from servants

A real atla fan never speaks ill of Katara or Mai

Wow you’re so smart for saying Ozai wasn’t evil. That’s definitely a thoughtful observation and not you completely misinterpreting a character and spinning your lack of comprehension as clout.

Ooh, now you’re saying Aang was abusive and the real villain? Boy we’re getting so clout thirsty now. Your hyper-fixation on and removal of situational context from a single scene where he does something bad is totally making your point appealing to us mere mortals.

Zuko has far more restraint than I do.

Because if I was Fire Lord, and this son of a bitch was rubbing it in my face that he was with my ex ... that's an instant Agni-Kai ... or a public execution.

ok, so we all know that mai is the most apathetic character in atla. conquering ba sing se for her is nothing (“just take the bear”), “victory is boring”, colorfulness “making her nauseous”.

she always complains about how bored she is, hates almost everything/everyone and nothing/no one can make her smile.

and THEN this ‘emotionless-cold-flat-gloomy-whatever’ girl aka ’the most bored/impassive person in the universe’ cuddles around zuko, chuckles and says that would be IMPRESSIVE if he finds a fruit tart for her.

and she looks at him with such fondness as if he’d already given her the whole world and even more.

if that’s not love, then I don’t know what is.

mai is a lovergirl forced into the body of a hater and you can't tell me otherwise... c'mon, her smile when she's in her feels??? beautiful girl.

I find it so funny that Zutaras, for generations, wrote entire think pieces about how Mai is:

1. Too Apolitical and apathetic to be a Firelady

2. Completely selfish and always acting in her own best interest

3. Would only hinder Zuko’s progress as a Firelord

All in attempt to diminish her character and try and prove Katara of all people would be a better Firelady.

Now we have CANON to confirm that Mai is fearless and a staunch advocate for undoing years of fire nation propaganda. And that she’s willing to drop everything to help Zuko in a noble cause - including teaching a new generation of kids the truth about the hundred year war.
