severance continues to get wilder. gretchen cheats on her husband with her husband; don't let her husband find out! ham-based throuple gets significantly more ominous. helena convinced mentioning local depressed alcoholic widower's dead wife by the wrong name is a surefire way to get him to need her carnally. somewhere markhelly is wasting company time getting freaky under a table. milchick beefs with child and paperclips.

my favourite thing about mark s. is that he's just a little bit unrenderable. like adam scott is soooo stunning but i feel like nobody can quite draw him. can't quite get the essence of his features. it's the zendaya phenomenon all over again. mark serves face but took the "render not my creation in miniature" too seriously 😭 render not at all apparently

severance really said they were gonna take the love square/triangle trope and make it so insane. NOBODY is doing it like them. gretchen has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever. burt out here ominously setting up a ham-based throuple. helena wants that widower cookie sooo bad.

SEVERANCE 2.05

the severance experience really is just switching between two states of ben stiller. mr. zoolander you are going to hear from me and by that i mean you are going to feel from me because you're catching these hands and either its a handshake or a grief-ridden punch

Some may be apprehensive that Severance won’t portray Mark’s interaction with Helena in the tent as the sexual assault it was. But not only will they — they already are.

Mark’s behavior toward Helly has completely changed. He doesn’t sit next to her at Irving’s funeral. He shuts down attempts at conversation with offhand, vague snarky comments and a defiantly blank facial expression. When Helly knocks on the door to the bathroom, his eyes dart around like an animal cornered. Where he once would have slowed down for her in the hallway so they could talk, he walks much faster ahead. He’s trying as hard as possible to avoid her. To ignore her. To run away.

Now contrast this with his treatment of “Helly” when she first walked out of the elevator in season two. He waited for her to arrive! He was so relieved she’d come back! And when they were walking down that hallway and he was explaining the situation with Ms. Casey, he stopped mid-stride, turned to her with a smile on his face, and said “Look, Helly—“

He never got to finish that sentence. But some say he was going to confess that though his outie had a wife, his affections lay with her. And I think they’re right.

So why is he acting so differently now? The answer is obvious: “Because they are smarter than us, okay? They know everything.”

After the assault, Mark likely feels like a complete idiot. He spent so much of season one deconstructing his beliefs and breaking free from Lumon’s propaganda. And the minute he believes he’s immune to their lies and no longer a corporate slave, he is taken advantage of and hoodwinked by the very figurehead of said company, masking as someone he loves.

A symbol of Lumon convinced him he was safe. Tricked him. Invaded him in the most intimate way possible, with him completely oblivious, “like an idiot.” Right when he thought everything might be okay.

So maybe Lumon’s right. Maybe there’s no point in fighting. Because if he was stupid enough to not realize his own friend was being possessed by her billionaire doppelgänger, then maybe Lumon is correct about innies being nothing more than pawns. Maybe they are people, and he really is… not. (That’s how Helena treated him, anyway.)

And if that’s the case, of course he wants to give up looking for Ms. Casey and lose himself in work! For a moment he thought he was a human being, deserving of autonomy over his own body and capable of something more than sitting behind a desk — but his assault sends that all crashing down. He is an extension of his outie, made for work and nothing more. Going beyond that gets dangerous. That’s what got Irving killed… and him in Helena’s tent. And Helly? He cannot trust Helly. As far as he knows, his only confirmed moment with Helly since the OTC was when he was holding her in his arms, his jacket wrapped around her shoulders. Why should it be Helly coming back to the severed floor? If Helena could trick him before, who says she can’t learn from her past mistakes and trick him again over and over? Mark refuses to be humiliated and hurt after last time, so he avoids her (and Dylan!) and puts up a barrier of cool, snarky indifference — just like how he deals with grief.

But we know that indifference is a mask. When Milchick walked out of the elevator after revealing he knew about him and Helena Eagan, Mark had no one to pretend for — and he went completely stiff, blankly wide-eyed in an expression extremely reminiscent of his usual innie self. Whatever the reasons for this, one thing’s for sure: Mark does deeply care about what happened in the tent. And at least for now, he will lose himself in Cold Harbor to cope with it.

Lumon certainly got their productive worker back. But good Lord… at what cost?

I'm curious about what a trans character in Severance would look like. Like, I can so clearly picture this person who gets the severance procedure to avoid being misgendered for 8 hours a day. Maybe they would even explicitly present as their birth gender at work so their innie wouldn't even know they are trans. Would they discover that about themselves? Would they feel that same kind of gender dysphoria and want to transition in the workplace? Idk I'm prepping for season 2 by rotting my own brain and thinking about it 24/7. Fanfic writers, please consider my idea and write a fic about a trans severed person. I would love it so much.

GUYS JUST FINISHED S2 E1 OF SEVERANCE AND IM GOING CRAZY

WARNING FOR HUUUUGE SPOILERS:

OKAY I NEED TO START SOMEWHERE—(keep in mind these are all theories)

Helly— Did anyone else think she was off? My theory is that it’s Helena Eagan who’s acting as Helly. The way she didn’t actually rip Milchick into pieces on SIGHT. She didn’t tell anyone about what she saw (which seems like something she would tell them because she’s an EAGAN FOR FUCKS SAKE) and also that she’s been reaaaaly weird abt Mark having a wife even thought there’s much more pressing issues at hand. It’s almost like she’s acting, and all she was told was her cover story, that she and Mark kissed, and that she hates outies.

Ms. Casey/Gemma— WHAT WHY WHERE. Where is she? Still don’t know. Why hasn’t Mark asked Milchick about it? He was insistent on the “Where is my team?” stuff, why wasn’t he on the Ms. Casey stuff too? Also, is she dead dead or did they do something brain-wise?

Irving— IF something’s up with Helly, I think he noticed and that’s why he only told Dylan about what he saw. Also why didn’t he leave? Why (maybe) can’t he leave?

Outies— Why haven’t we seen any of them yet? From the little bts thing, we saw outie Mark and Mark S. switching—almost like Petey. In that case, does that mean they’ve all been reintegrated and side effects haven’t shown up yet? I think if this is the case—or not— whatever’s happened to Ms. Casey, they might have done to MDR.

Devon— If outie Mark is back and alive and well, what is Devon doing about it? She knows that Ms. Casey is alive (not who she is as an innie, but just in general) and she would probably tell Mark as soon as he was back. Also Ms. Cobel? She knows about that now.

Ms. Cobel— Where is she? Was she killed? Is she working from the inside? Is she really gone from Lumon, or is she some sort of acolyte to the board? Why does her name still show up on Milchick’s computer? Does that mean Milchick isn’t really the one who runs this whole thing?

Mr. Milchick— Why does Ms. Cobel’s name on his computer bother him so much? Is he actually trying to reform the severed floor or is he just bluffing? What’s his deal with the family visitation room? Why did he let the MDR team see them again? Is he like a puppet, or is he genuinely trying to do something?

Miss Huang— Apparently Miss Huang is supposed to be Mark and Ms. Casey/Gemma’s kid according to some articles my dad read (but also want the crash like only 2 years ago?) WHY IS SHE SO CREEPYYY? Does she have something to do with the control of the severed floor? She seems to know more than she’s letting on. She also seems to not like Mr. Milchick, which is similar to how Ms. Cobel didn’t really like Milchick. I think she might be an extension of Ms. Cobel of sorts.

General outside— At least with Helena/Helly, news has got to have been broken. What is happening regarding severance outside? What happened after Irving got switched back and was banging at Burt’s door? What happens with that pro-severance guy and his wife?

ANYWAYS, that’s some of my takes and questions on this. Can’t wait for e2 on Friday!

I just watched the Severance season 2 finale, and I'd just like to say, I feel like screaming, sobbing and throwing up, it was so good, but also WHYYYYYYY. Oh the emotional turmoil has me in a choke hold. 😭😭😭😭

What really gets me about Gemma and Mark's life before Lumon is how full of KNOWLEDGE it was! They meet at university whilst donating blood in a library! They're humanities professors! They joke about their students' work! Gemma has books stacked everywhere in her office! When we get to see their house, it's wall-to-wall bookshelves, and where there isn't a bookshelf, there's an open window, or a plant! Can you imagine how much the innies would fuck with that??? Their work is something they love and it bleeds out from their campus and office scenes and visually dominates the flashback scenes! Post-severance, we see Mark watching tv in suburbia whilst drinking in his free time, completely divorced from this love of learning and knowing, are all his books packed away in the basement like Gemma? AND INNIE MARK! We see how strictly Lumon controls the spread of information, how outside materials are discouraged, how they just love making shit up ("tallest waterfall" etc) but when he gets Rickon's stupid shitty book Mark is still enthralled by it! Outie Mark does everything he can to erase his life with Gemma but we still see that love of learning and knowledge COME BACK!!!
