All Vanessa could do was nod. It wasn’t her place to really question or need to know anymore than was being told to her. Vanessa purposely stayed out Athletics to avoid comparisons to her brothers and her little crush on the Dallas boy who lived down the block. The Hounds were known and the reputation of the kind of girls that appealed to them was legendary to the town coining a nickname for those kind of girls. Her father always warned what happened to those kind of girls.“It’s really not my business. You don’t have to explain,” she explained, nonchalantly.

“What gave it away?” Vanessa was shy in the most traditional sense, but when it came performing Vanessa shined. She didn’t need words or brains to try and impress people, just being in tune with her body was enough. Her movements said all her words were too shaken to say. “Unfortunately, ballerinas don’t have the luxury of Wrestlers and Hockey players where all you have to do is bulk up and block. I tend to bake more than I actually get to enjoy,” Vanessa replied playfully.

And soon as the idea of other plans came up, Vanessa felt herself whimpering away a bit. If there was something he felt was more important to go to it felt better to give permission than to bee stood up. Or at least that’s how she thought of it. “We could meet after if you want?” Cheeks flushing immediately red as the words beautiful escaped her lips. “No nickname needed. V or Nessa usually gets my attention.”

He bit his lip, a nervous habit he picked up when he was younger. Not often did he get nervous with girls, but then again none of the girls that he was around were like vanessa. Not immediately trying anything she could to bed him, instead actually holding a conversation. She was quiet, but not in a weird way, it was endearing, it made him want to learn more. Dallas wanted to learn about her, get to know the girl hiding in the shadows. “But I want you to know the truth, theres a million rumors surrounding the team and yet no one really knows the truth but us,”

“Not saying anything, but youre tinier than most humans in the height department. And they tend to be able to be lifted in the air easier, and move lighter on their feet,” He spoke, the few amounts of dance knowledge he got from his siblings and cousins, “And theres not a lot of gymnasts around here, which is ironically made for smaller people based on the movements, but youd need a little but more muscle mass and calloused hands for that one,” he joked, before laughing lightly, “ill give you, it does have its perks but we still have to be cautious of what we eat, not everything is made for healthy bulking. However, I was taught to never turn down baked goods from a known female,” sending a wink at her before smiling softly.

Dallas shook his head, “ive been to more than enough team after parties, its always the same thing. Id rather spend time with my new best friend, get to know you better, and maybe introduce you to some fun spots around town,” Nodding at the nicknames, “Theyre nice, but I want something unique, something like,” pausing as he mused over the thoughts in his brain, “Vanni,”

“Anyway they can?” Her mind could assume what that meant, but Vanessa wasn’t as naive as she looked. Vanessa had brothers; she knew how they talked about the girls they liked and even heard how they spoke around their friends. Wouldn’t be surprising to hear worse from the hockey boys. “Figured you had enough people in your life, plus my Mama always said when you’re wanted, they’ll know,” Vanessa recited, a hint of softness in her tone.

“Hey, never said they’d be cheat day worthy. Dancers gotta stay inn shape just as much as hockey players do!”

Once again, Vanessa found her eyes fluttering at hiss words, finding a warmth she didn’t realize Vanessa wanted. “And we could… um, hang out after too.” And for once it was a direct statement. Not dancing around the topic or showing fear, but asking directly for what she wanted. “Unless you gotta curfew, Mikey,” Vanessa teased, using the nickname for the first time.

“Some people like to take extreme measures to ensure they’re seen,” he shrugged, “I’m not gonna sit here and lie to you and say I haven’t taken them up on their offers, but it’s few and far between,” he knew the secrets of the hounds weren’t really secrets, the boys tending not to keep their mouths closed when other people are around. But he also knew they liked the overdramatize their escapades, making for a lot of unknowns and rumors.

Dallas couldn’t help the chuckle from his lips, her physique making much more sense now that he knew she was a dancer. “Let me guess, you’re one of them ballerinas? Even a ballerina needs a good set of waffles, maybe I’ll have to take you to my favorite stop,”

He smiled softly as she spoke, noticing a sudden confidence lacing her words. Her words more direct, not a question, or assumption, but a plan. “Not so much a curfew as the team always likes to have a lil party of sorts, but I will be more than glad to blow them off for you. Some of em have been in my life for way to long, but I also can’t see it without em,” a small sigh following his words, looking down for a second. , “anyway,” he spoke shrugging it off, and glancing back up. “Since I happen to have a new nickname, looks like I gotta figure one out for a beautiful girl,”

All Vanessa could do was nod. Of course he’d have some hometown girl by his side, plenty of high school turned frat boys, and a town rallying every game. It was the life people always spoke highly in regards to the Dallas child. She couldn’t imagine the pressure of having the world on her shoulders like that.  Her heart immediately dropped hearing the phrase puck bunny. “Oh.” That was all she could manage. It wasn’t her place to feel insecure about other girls, but knowing Dallas played into the idea it only made her feel like Dallas wouldn’t be interested if held out.

She fixed her demeanor, quickly flashing a soft smile and brushing pieces of hair out of her face. Vanessa didn’t want it to seem like it affected her at all. “I would.. very much like that if you could? And I can totally pay you back or bake you waffles or something,” she added sweetly.

The space now closed between them, Vanessa could feel the tension in her body growing as her eyes stayed locked on his lips. She had been thinking about it all night and was practically holding her breath waiting for the moment. “I….” Vanessa’s voice’s attempted before being cut off my his lips. Her small frame wrapped into his arms, Vanessa felt like air being lifted in spirit. Vanessa’s face an obvious flush of red as she pulled away slowly, but still only inches from his lips. “Then I’ll be there.”

He watched her face fall at his words, furrowing his brows in slight confusion. “I like that about you, it’s not a bad thing. The other girls work to hard to get the teams attention, in anyway they can, it’s exhausting. Not knowing what reason they’re talking to you for, or why they’re with us.” He spoke, a soft smile on his lips, “I like the fact you aren’t just throwing yourself into us and into our lives, it’s refreshing. It’s honest,”

Dallas watched her movements, having noticed the piece of hair himself. “I will gladly oblige, and maybe take you up on those waffles. Cheat day of you will,” he sent a wink to her with a small laugh.

He had finally got to kiss her, something he admittedly had thought about more times than just in this room. Holding her gently as he pulled her closer, gently melting into the kiss before she pulled away. He acknowledged the light tint in her cheeks, his eyes immediately finding hers as she spoke, “I’m very glad to hear that,”

“It’ll all be worth it, you know. The rest of us will be here and you’ll be living your dreams and traveling the world. Just don’t forget us small people on the way up,” Vanessa teased. “But seriously, From what I’ve seen, off day, good day, or bad day you’re still one of the best players that team is ever gonna have.” Her voice was encouraging, the natural caregiver in herself coming out the more she spoke. It was a softness, a gentleness, a subtly that most people couldn’t put their tongues on. “

And she could feel her skin getting warmer, as Vanessa closed the carpet space between them, almost wanting to hold the moment between them and allow his words to sink in. The height difference more than obvious even with them sitting down. “You may know someone?” Vanessa grinned, a small giggle escaping. She hid her excitement, but Vanessa could feel her heart pounding through her chest wanting to scream yes. “I wouldn’t pay much attention to the other players,” Vanessa spoke., words coming out before she heard herself.

Eyes wide and cheeks growing red, “Wait no, not like, cause I wanna watch you per say, more so because you’re the only one I now. Not, wait, not like I don’t wanna watch you either because I’m sure you’re great and fun to watch and….” she rambled. “I’m… gonna stop talking now.”

“I could never forget about the small town folk, especially since I see someone being there with me,” he wasn’t sure the undertones in his words. Not realizing he was thinking about her still being in his life, even if he meant one of his friends when he began his sentence he realized it didn’t stick to them. “Thank you Vanessa, that means a lot coming from someone who isn’t a puck bunny or trying to get an in,”

He watched her move closer, his instinct telling him to reach out and pull her in but he instead stood where he was his gaze drawing to her shorter form as she got closer. “There’s a possibility, I happen to know how to pull strings,” ignoring the small swell of his heart as he heard that sweet giggle coming from her mouth. And it was because of him, a soft smile tugging at his lips.

Listening in amusement as she spoke, watching and listening with his arms crossed. A soft chuckle falling from his lips before he stepped closer, “I prefer knowing your eyes are all on me, truth be told I play a little better knowing you’re there,” he spoke grabbing her around the waist, pulling her in and softly pressing his lips to hers.

“Nervous.” Vanessa repeated, allowing herself to try and gauge where Dallas was at. She paused, taking a moment to be a little more thoughtful in her comments, one of the notable things people differed from Vanessa and her more impulsive classmates. “I can’t imagine you’d be nervous, the entire town practically has your back and support, but I’m sure that kind of pressure can be intense…”

And it was that small chuckle that sent Vanessa’s eyes fluttering. Everything about exuded confidence from his laughter, the base in his voice, the relaxation in his walk––not that she spent time watching him or anything. Maybe day dreaming about what’d she say if he bumped into her, asked her the time of day, or something caused their hands to brush against each other. Of course nothing that she’d say out loud, she had enough friends with eyes on Dallas that she knew she’d never win, so instead, Vanessa would milk this for all she had or (as she assumes will happen) until he got bored of her.

Vanessa’s attention perked, finally matching Dallas’ hues. Her bright hazel eyes looking up to try and force herself not to read too much into such a simple question. “Um, I hadn’t planned on it?” He was probably just curious. Most people go to the games anyway; the team was the town’s glory after all. Plus her friends usually ditched her after the games for personal time with players, and nothing looked worse than being alone on a Friday night around Guelph. Dallas probably didn’t care if she would one way or another, just making conversation. “Probably not. I heard it was sold out already,” she added, trying to sound indifferent about it.

Dallas watched the gears turn in her head, an amused smile lingering on his face. “Yes nervous. Everyone’s watching my every move when I’m on the ice, expecting great things from me. Even on my off days, it gets draining sometimes,” he finished with a soft sigh, not sure why he was spilling his heart to her. Maybe it was the alcohol in his bloodstream, or simply because she brought something out in him that just made him comfortable. Either way he was grateful for it.

Dallas had noticed her more than once, the way her eyes twinkled when she’d laugh at something her friends say. Or the little taps of her fingers and far off look in her coffee colored eyes. She wasn’t one to be the center of attention, leaving her friends to go with who they may and Vanessa left behind. There was something enthralling about the girl willing to let everyone else shine around her, and he wanted more chances to get to know more about her.

There was a noticeable dimming in Dallas’ eyes as she spoke. A soft nod as she spoke, he had noticed her at few and far in between games. But he always played a little bit better knowing she was watching him, maybe trying to show off a little bit or maybe that comfortability he felt tonight, traveled to the ice. “I think I may know someone who could squeeze you a ticket,” he joked laughing lightly, “for real, I want you to come, see us kick ass in the semi-finals,”

once they speakers and outside voices finally seemed to drown out, vanessa realized it really was just her and mike. she knew what the game meant and what most of her friends were planning on doing once they with their respective crushes, but for vanessa the way wasn’t as clear. vanessa wasn’t as comfortable as those around her in being undressed or the catcalling from the boys during gym. boys like mike dallas. it would be a lie to say she didn’t keep her ear somewhat pressed onto the grapevine around Guelph in regards to the boy. vanessa knew the stories, the whispers, and from the way girls swooned just to get a smile there had to be some light to them.

but vanessa didn’t want to let that sway her too much.  after all, if that’s what dallas was into or wanted to do––she wasn’t what he wanted. the girls at their school hiked their skirts up, applied make up like walking instagram filters, and tight fitting uniforms. vanessa on the other-hand only had her small size going for her which forced her skirt to be above her knees which the basketball team happily told her time and time again.

right now though, she’d enjoy whatever time she had left with him and go back to day dreaming about him and what she wished she would have had more courage to do during cheer practice. “nice to finally be formally introduced to the myth and legend that is Mike Dallas,” she joked lightheartedly. “are you… are you excited for the game this weekend?”

He enjoyed the air she held around her, something different than the usual people he was used to being around. It was different, he wasnt afraid to admit that. Used to girls openly spilling what they felt to him, or simply throwing themselves at them. He could sense something from her, whether it was nerves or uncomfortableness or simply something else; he wasn’t sure. The words spoke about it him around the halls of degrassi wasn’t anything secret, they weren’t at the top of the food chain quite yet but people still liked to talk.

Dallas wasn’t a stranger to the words spoken about Vanessa through the various sports team. She wasn’t quite like the other girls that were more than ready to let the team do what they wanted. And that intrigued Dallas, something he kept to himself. Not for fear of what his team or the other guys would say around the halls. But because he understood her difference, she was something else around the halls and he enjoyed her presence. Dallas wanted to get to know her more and more as time passed, he just wasn’t sure how to go about it.

He hoped that tonight would span more conversations and times they could be together, but for now he’d take what he could get and at least talk to her. A small chuckle falling from his lips, his tongue licking his lips slightly before nodding. “Excited, and a lil nervous as usual. No matter how many times I’ve done it they’re still there,” he shrugged lightly, “I can only assume you’re joining us all there?”
