Hi Will! How did Anya get involved with ERGO? She seems kind of on the young side, is she new to the program or get involved earlier somehow? Can you be an Enhanced and work for ERGO? Is ERGO top secret or is it a known branch of the government?

What does it stand for?

ERGO stands for the Enhanced Regulation and Global Oversight department!! Aka ya boi rly rly wanted a fun cool acronym T-T

Is it known by the public or unknown?

ERGO is both known and unknown. A lot of people know of it, they know it’s a branch of the government that was made to deal with the enhanced, though no one knows exactly what it is that happens there. It’s safer that way, best to not put a target on their backs, a lot of people have it out for enhanced people.

Can you be Enhanced and work for ERGO?

Yes! The majority of ERGO’s members are enhanced!!! Including their acting director, retired hero Gray Adler (hero name placebo). Though there are a few non enhanced members, including Kyra (character in act 2 :3)

How did Anya get involved?

Okay okay so in the city where this is set (setting intros coming soon!) anti-enhanced riots are pretty common and a really bad one broke out and while trying to contain it, Gray got injured! They took a back road trying to get back to the liek main building or whatever

Enter 18 y/o!Anya, walking home from class and using that same back road to get there quicker! She’s jsut innocently going about her day and boom she’s face to face with one of her favorite hero’s who is injured.

Prolonged eye contact ✨

And then Anya goes and heals them (bc that’s her enhancement! Yippee!!)

Gray: ‘oh wow that is a very useful power uh. want a job?’

Anya: ‘…sure?’

Gray: ‘ur mine now’

And now Anya’s their second favorite recruit! (jsut behind Kyra, who Gray has been fighting to adopt for years lmao)

What made you decide to call your characters "Enhanced" instead of something like "superpowered" or "mages" or something else?

Oooooh love this question!

I knew I didn’t what to drift too far into high fantasy from the real world because I specifically wanted to have this story be more in the realistic side, which crosses of ‘mage’s’ and anything adjacent for me bc that feels like a staple of fantasy worlds

And ‘superpowers’ just feels…. overused, I guess? And it implies that it’s something supernatural (at least to me)

And in this, it isn’t! It’s more of like a… genetic anomaly thingy????? Longer lore post at it is coming soon

So I wanted something with less of a fantastical or overused connotation, I wanted something to make this story stand out

As you're writing what you've stated is a very old story, has a lot changed since you began it? If so, what's the biggest thing?

Heya!!!!

Not a lot has changed to be perfectly honest, the plot is still mostly the same, and the characters have only been expanded upon!

I guess some of the larger changes have been to the story from a conflict standpoint. When I was a kid I was a more novice writer with no concept for what made a good, compelling story. There was literally no overarching conflict lol

But now there are MULTIPLE conflicts external and internal (some I cannot disclose for spoiler reasons) that compile onto each other for a fun story!!!!!!!

I’ve also added some characters! For example Adam and Robyn used to be love interests.. and now Adam has a wonderful gf Kyra and Robyn is aroace!

Since today is Mother’s Day, here’s a snippet from chapter three !!!!!!

She remembered when she was younger, a scared teenager who’d been ripped away from everything she’d ever known, and placed with a bunch of strangers. When she had nightmares, her mom—well, foster mom at that time—would make her a mug of warm hot chocolate and sit with her until she felt better. The only sound would be the woman’s humming and the occasional sniffle of a very confused twelve year old who had no idea what was going to come of her.

It was funny, the fact that she now recalled those as fond memories, considered those ‘strangers’ family more so then even the one she’d lost.

╰› This was the alias Charlie used during her time as a fighter. She was one of those kids who was really into trains, so it was a play on that and an electrical conductor.

Enhancement || Electrokenisis

╰› Charlie's body creates an excess amount of static electricity, which causes many health issues such as chronic migraines and seizures (powers with drawbacks my beloved). She can expel small amounts of electricity from her body (typical lightning powers you'd see in media), as well as manipulate electrical devices around her (lights, for example).

Charlie has warm brown skin and caramel brown eyes that look almost gold in the sun. Her wavy dark brown hair is usually tied back in a small ponytail or bun, especially when she's working or at the gym, though a few strands hang loosely over her forehead.

She's quite tall and well built, considering how active she is. She has one of those noses that's clearly been broken before and never really healed right, so not it's kinda crooked.

Outfits || Her work outfit is a simple white collared shirt rolled up to her elbows, under a black vest type thing--typical bartender uniform thingy. When she's not at work, she doesn't put a huge amount of effort into her appearance, dressing simple and practical rather than for fashion.

For as long as she could remember, Charlie's been angry.

At the world, at the people who ruined her life, at her brother, and most of all at herself. It started as a quiet burn inside of her when her brother died, and only intensified as she grew older and eventually escaped the facility. Eventually, though, with the right people to help, she's learned to start managing it. She's still angry, but now she doesn't have to beat up people twice her size to deal with it.

...at least for a while.

ANYWAYS.

She's friendly at the surface level--she has to be, working in customer service--but she's still pretty reserved and secretive. Paranoid, almost. She doesn't give up personal information easily. But if you're someone she's already close with, she's fairly loyal and open. It just takes a bit to get there.

She's really athletic, and enjoys playing and watching sports, working out, going to the gym, etc etc. She's reactive, adaptable, and a fighter at heart.

Charlie was twelve years old when her enhancement developed. She was simply sitting in her 6th grade science classroom, trying to ignore the boys in her class who kept throwing colored pencils at her. But eventually, she turned, yelled, "will you quit it?", and the lights in the classroom went out.

While in hindsight, it was painted as simply a coincidence--faulty wires, or something--Charlie knew deep down that it wasn't. She'd heard the stories of the kids who could do crazy things on tv, of course. But she'd also heard stories of those people being murdered, kicked out, and other unspeakable things. So, she was smart enough to stay quiet.

Unfortunately, someone else noticed.

Her science teacher, Mr. Holt. He'd always talked in class about the enhanced, seemed fascinated by them. Charlie had never thought much about that.. until he took her.

One moment, she was simply walking home from the park with her 5 year old little brother, Caleb, and the next.. a sharp pain in her neck, then darkness.

The siblings awoke in some sort of makeshift science laboratory that looked like it had been built out of a shed.

The next three and a half years of Charlie's life were a blur of experiments and agony. From what she could gather, Holt was fascinated by the enhanced, he would do anything to figure out why they could do what they could do, how that could help him, etc etc. Charlie and her brother were the unfortunate guinea pigs for his tests.

Caleb was killed a year into it, experiment gone wrong, and maybe he was the lucky one. And then Charlie was alone, terrified.

She was fifteen when she finally escaped, by stealing some chemicals from the lab, dumping them onto Holt's face, and making a run for it.

She wandered for a while, having no idea where she was, what to do, where to go, etc. She eventually found her way into the city, and for a while she.. survived. She slept wherever she could, found food, used the public computers in the library to find out that not only had she been pronounced missing and then dead, but her parents had died sometime in her absence as well. She doubted it was an accident.

She was angry. She was alone, terrified, starving, but most of all she was so, so angry.

Eventually, she came across this sort of.. fight club, for enhanced people. It offered a pretty good pay for the simple act of going into a pit and beating the shit out of someone.. no rules, just entertainemnt for whatever sickos decided to check it out.

It wasn't perfect, but it was the best opportunity she had. So, Charlie signed up. Even though most of her opponents were twice her size, she was able to fight defensively and use her powers to her advantage.

She used this as her primary income for food and basic needs for a while, until she met Robyn.

He was also a fighter at this place, around her age. They met between matches, quickly becoming good friends. Good enough that they were eventually able to scrounge together enough money to get a tiny apartment together and enroll in school.

Charlie now works as a bartender at the Sine, a sports bar a little away from her college campus. She shares an apartment with Robyn while she works on a kinesiology degree.

Welcome to THE ENHANCED, a personal writing project that is a rewrite of a very, very old story I was working on a long time ago. I will probably never officially publish this, but I still wanted to get it out to the world somehow, so this blog came to be.

(The plot is really old so expect some cliches T-T)

I will be posting chapters (probably in parts) for your enjoyment. I do not have a definite release schedule yet, as I have to actually write it out first, but I will keep you guys updated as much as possible.

My plan right now is to write all of act 1 before I start posting so I can keep a semi-consistent schedule of publication, but that's open to change.

Anya really, really hates lying to people. Which is weird, considering that when she's not suffering through getting a criminology degree, she has a part time job at the Pacific Northwest chapter of ERGO--an organization that protects and monitors people who were born....different.

The enhanced, they were dubbed, the handful of kids who were born around the world with any kind of 'enhancement'--from being exceptionally strong or fast to having wings. And just like anything new... it wasn't taken very well by the general population.

Anya's newest project should be fairly simple: check out college student Charlie, who they suspect to be enhanced, and to have some unfortunate connections that could be invaluable in the fight for acceptance and safety.
